Can "Restore" engine restorer and lubricant be used in Flatheads? I've heard pro and con. Some guys always use it, saying it really restorers compression and pep, others swear it gums up their engines. What about in a Flattie??????????????? Thanx.
It can be. Will it do anything? I don't think a damn thing. If the engine needs a rebuild there is no magic to just pour in.
Any "mechanic in a can" can only do so much. It depends on what the issues are with the engine. No idea about a flathead but I had a Toyota 4-banger that rattled a bit on startup until the oil started flowing. A can of Restore made all the difference in the world. But.. it does make the oil sticky and when you tear an engine apart after using the stuff for a while you will probably not like what you see. Bottom line for me and based on my experiences: If I want to keep the engine for a long time.. rebuild it and get it over with. Use the stuff and plan on having to do a cleanup if you want to rebuild later. I've got a can in my $1000 '93 daily now because of noise, not power or oil consumption. But like someone else wrote here in a post: I'm just some guy on the internet. Good luck.
DON'T!! It blocked the filter screen,on a scb chev. It will do the same on an old flathead ,in a heartbeat.. use STP instead,but no 'powdered metal" restore'. It is Engine Murder,in a can.....
I wouldn't use it for the flathead for the reasons mentioned above- however, I have used it on every oil change for my '94 Escort wagon (1.9l 5 speed) and it makes a big difference! 243K miles and still running strong.
While I'm not familiar with this particular brand of snake oil, I did see a sbc in the junk yard that was litterally covered with a thick layer of silvery slime inside it. I would personally not add anything that had anything like powdered metal in it. Maybe a can of STP would help take care of some of the internal slop, but nothing will rebuild it that comes in a can.
I used to make fun if it just like everybody else but I tried it several years ago on a bet with a mechanic friend. I lost the bet. Now I use it in my work beaters when they start getting loose but they're usually V-6 FWD Disposacars. Run 'em into the ground and throw 'em away but it really helped quiet valvetrain noise, cut oil consumption and helped perfromance and fuel economy on my old 130,000 mile '94 LeSabre. I traded it for some tranny work at 203,000 miles, he drove it all Winter and just sold it to somebody else. Would I put it in something I intended to keep like my Stude? No, it won't replace a proper overhaul but it's great for squeezing a little more life out of a high mileage wheezer. For those that don't care to believe it that's fine, makes no difference to me, I know the results I get and that's all that matters to me.
STP is the absolute worst thing to put into any motor unless you are going to junk it. It puts a film on all the parts that doesn't come off EVER!! Restore is stuff I've used alot in engines and when I've pulled them down it cleans up nice. But it's true there is no rebuild in a can that works, just holds things together for awhile longer. Ain't it wierd how all of these oil additive are supposed to be snake oil. I tend to believe that Lucas oil products would fall into the same catagory but they must be selling there stuff to a bunch of fools because they sure have a lot of money to sponser all these different race car teams. Yeah I can see someone buying Lucas products once and not ever buying it again because it didn't do any good but evidently customers keep coming back to buy more. So if Lucas stuff is good, how come the oil companys don't put that Lucas stuff in there oil when they bottle it?
Lucas will destroy the detergents and anti foam agents in your oil. It works very well in stock car and race engines that change oil very often. It will shorten the life of a car driven on the streetand the oil changed normally. You must be using the wrong brand of oil if you have to add something to it There is no such thing as a additive that will rebuild your engine! OldWolf
Thanx guys. I think for now I'll just let things be. Not about to do a 50/50 unknown. Will go the proper way with rebuild when needed.
