Is there only one vin location on my Model A frame? My body/floor hides the vin number and I need to do my DMV inspection. I did a search but didnt find the answer. .
Yup, got to lift the body to see the number. Inspectors around here like it to have the body loose, so you can just lift it a little. The only other spot for a number will be the bellhousing of the trans.
I registered my model A with the # on the engine (original banger) It had the vin stars and all. But Chris is right, you have to take off the body to see the frame #.
28-29 had the date stamped on the firewall side of the gas tank on the driver's side. The engines were test fired at the factory, if they passed a sequential number was stamped on it. When it was placed in a chassis, this number was transferred to the chassis. On top of the framerail right around the clutch pedal. Like the other guys said, got to lift up the body.
Glen, I went thru that here in the East Vallley and the number is on the frame under the cowl so I leave it permantly registered and licensed in Washington State. Insurance folks here in Aridzona have a fit 'cause the DMV keeps saying that they don't have a record of the car. It's a pain.
I plan to add one of those neat little VIN# tags to my firewall and door jamb once I've got it in paint and driving it. Most of the DMV people around here wouldn't know the difference.
If that old A-Bone spent its life someplace like Arizona then the number should be there as was previously mentioned. If it was in the rust belt good luck. A lot of them have been pitted bad enough that it is unreadable without chemical treatment.
Yes, its bright and clear. I was hoping there might be another number somewhere else so I didnt have to lift the body for them. Thanks for all the replies.
On my A in Texas I made a tag for the door jamb and they were OK with that. At the pileup this year I found a really official looking tag that I stamped with my VIN, maybe put a little overspray on it. This comment is for off road use only, This comment is for entertainment purposes only
I found a number stamped in the first cross rail of the subframe.... just under where the drivers seat would be mounted.. anybody have an idea what this number would be... It doesn't match the number on the frame rail... I believe that it started with a "T"... '31 A Tudor body...
This is the body number. Letters tell you what plant the body was made in and the numbers are the serial number of the body only. Not on all bodies.
i only found one set of "vin numbers" on the frame rail. all the other numbers pertain to manufactuing plant and body style, and the numbers on my tank were the manufacturing or assembly date.
That is kinda what I thought, but wasn't sure... I can read most of my VIN on the frame rail, but the middle 2 numbers aren't there... looks like they just didn't get punch too well...
those 2 numbers near the center of the vin are the 2 that were hard to read on mine too. I think it was where the body blocks rub alot and wear it down a bit. there are ways to make it show. Just like any thing that is stamped in steel it is more than skin deep. think of how those crime science guys get those numbers off of pistols used in murders after they have been filed off.
