How do I remove adhesive? 1935 Nebraska plates

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldfart, Mar 18, 2008.

  1. I have a set of NOS 1935 Nebraska license plates that were stored in the original envelope w/a piece of plastic between them.Over the years, the plastic degraded and now the plates have plastic melted to them.I tried to remove some of it(on the back) with Greased lightening. It took the paint but no plastic.Dish soap did nothing.Any ideas? Will someone please post pix for me [email protected]

Might not work on your plates, but WD-40 removes adhesive.

Maybe soak 'em in hot water with mild dish detergent.

if your going to repaint them (since it took the paint on one try) id soak them in lacquer thinner, that stuff will take anything off!!

How about a 175 degree oven for a little while to get them unstuck.

Goo Gone. Don't know how it affects the surface of the plate so maybe try a small drop in the corner, but it's worked great on some other painted surfaces I've used it on.

There are some non-toxic adhesive removers based on citric acid, available at any major hardware store, that should do the trick without harming the paint.

I've removed stuck on masking tape by soaking it in oliver oil. Don't know if that will help, but it won't harm your plates. Good luck. If you find something that works-post it during tech week.More folks will read it,

I would go with the WD40 idea. I have removed bumper stickers with it. will not damage paint.
