    I have a 53 Belair with a 235/3 speed man. trans. The motor is knocking. I have in my shop an inline 6 out of a 63 biscayne but the bellhousings are different. Is there anyway I can swap these motors and keep my enclosed driveshaft and 3 speed trans?

    Here's your response... Don't expect immediate answers most the time. Don't you think 3 posts in less than an hour is a bit much?

  5. yes, if the 63 motor already has a standard shift bellhousing you can use the transmission from a 51-54 chevy pickup and most likely the shift arms from your 53 or a combination of both. you will have to fabricate new motor mounts.

    I got one of them trans, isn't the torque tube mount different than the car? Size or bolt pattern? I had a reason not to use it on my 54 car, but can't remember why.

    Thanks for the info guys. I'm in NC and I'm new to building these cars. Would you rebuild the 53 235 or try and find a full pressure 235 (54-62) to rebuild? And do you know of any local resources I can check out. Again Thanks for the info.

    I used the search function and came up with:

    But then I only went back 4 pages.:D

    If you don't find what you are looking for here, check the websites jcruz mentioned.

    IMHO I would want a 261 for it. But then I would want to 'caddify' it (stroker using 292 rods and caddy pistons, 285+CID).

    It's your car, if you can afford to make what you have work, go for it.

    Does your '53 have an open driveline in it already? If so are you sure this is the original engine? I only ask as that might have a bearing on what it would cost to fix the 235 (no pun intended).

    Is this your daily driver (is that why it's that urgent)?

    FIrst, is that 63 6 a 235? I t hought they stopped using 235s in 62. If it's not a 235, then it's a whole other engine family and it will not bolt up to your driveline

    I have decided to rebuild the 235 and keep the 3 on the tree with the enclosed drive shaft. I was really concerned about it holding up under todays speeds of 60 and 65. But my friend whose going to help me said that should not be a problem. That for all the info guys.

    Glad to hear you aren't stranded. Good luck with the overhaul.

    Gee, who would that be.:rolleyes::D

    So was there another reason for that, other than for 'reference' puproses of the article?

    Hey nex - I guess I'm stealing the thread a bit here. the only purpose for the stroker comment was that we found that the Caddy pistons arent being made any more. What is on the shelf is supposed to be it. So, it looks like they are essentially obsolete.
