TECH: MOON Hub cap conversion, snap-on to screw-on, my way. Machining them down.

Alright, snap on Moon discs are soooooo not traditional, but I took some snap-ons and turned them into screw-ons, with a twist.

Snap on disks are too big to fit "into" the wheel perfectly, so I machined them down with an unconventional approach, using a wood router table.
These are made of aluminum, so therefore easely shaped with wood tools.

    Step 1:
The snap on part of these Saturns is easily removed by simply pulling the spring out of the "groove".

    Step 2:
In order to align/center the cap, so I could take an even 1/4" off all around, I took a piece of 1/4" plywood, cut it to the size of the hubcap, drilled a center hole into the wood, to create a pivot/center point, just like a turntable, and used double stick carpet tape to stick the two together.
    Make sure thats done accurately.

    Step 3:
I set up my router table with a straight bit.
I carefully handheld the hubcap and took a 1/4" out of it, just a tiny sliver.
I became clear that I had to make 2 passes with the routerbit, first pass I took off the "folded edge" and with the second pass, I took off the remaining material, to get the desired diameter.
The discs get basically rotated by hand with tons of WD-40 as a lubricant.

    Step 4:
The hubcap was sanded to get rid of the rough edge.

    Step 5:
I drilled 3 holes in the hub cap, not where you normally see them but more towards the center, where there are, 3 dimples on these OEM wheels I have.
    Step 6:
I drilled coresponding holes in the actual rim, tapped a 1/4"-28 thread and installed my modified Moon discs, with some fancy aircraft fasteners.
    Done.

    Finished product.
I have to say, that my wheels are reversed, so there was'nt a valve stem clearence issue.

    Hope you like.
Just another lo-buck solution, that took maybe 2 hours to complete.

  10. Pretty cool. I wonder if you attached them with brushed s/s allen button heads if they would sort of disappear? In any event they look great. How noisy is the router when cutting these?

It is loud as hell, and aluminum pieces fly all over the place, wear a hood. Without lubrication (WD40) in my case, the router bit get's clogged up, in no time.

    That look GREAT!
Now, if you want to add one more dimension to this project, those 12 point bolts also are available drilled for safety wire. Just an idea.
