I spent the whole evening yesterday looking over this thread. I don't post over here much as I spend most of my time searching, gleaning, and reading the forum. I had no idea there were so many 6's lurking over here.

Really surprized to see so many mopar flatheads. Those were the engines that turned me from a V8 OHV man into a flathead inline fanatic. That led me to the Hudson flathead inline, which is where I've kinda stuck and enjoyed every minute of my trials and small triumphs.

The 308 currently sitting under the hood of my '49 Super Six Hudson
    [IMG]

Its a basic, very conservative engine which should be well suited to the McCulloch supercharger planned for it this winter. The McCulloch was originally a Kaiser unit that was adapted to the Hudson by the man I bought it from. He raced a McCulloch powered Hudson in '54, with this supercharger. This was a picture he sent me of it mocked up on one of his Hudson projects. You can see why I took the lion's share of the Hot Rod budjet for '07 to have it.

Rudy, the gentleman who sold me the McCulloch, is into turbos these days. Same engine, newer technology. A picture of his turbocharged Hudson in a stock looking '47 Sedan. He can't keep a vintage driveline behind it that will hold. I can sympathize with this problem.

We're also working on a 354 CID stroker Hudson to be supplied by triple Weber DCOE carbs. I actually have the McCulloch mocked up on this outfit now, but no pics. I can't make my mind up on whether to plan it for a McCulloch down the road or leave it naturally aspirated. I'm holding out for a more traditional car, to put this engine out in view rather than hiding it under a stepdown's hood.

Some very cool engines in this thread, of all stripes. My compliments on them all.

Inline fever is highly contagious, with complications of L-head highly likely. So beware.

Oooooh, this thread, it is almost pornographic or something. :p

I've loved inline sixes since I was a little kid, the sound both at low and high RPMs, the smooth way they are running, and especially the looks... Nothing beats an inline six with three or rather six carburetors, lots of chrome and wierd looking exhaust header... :D

Unfortunately, I don't have any cool inline six to show you, only the one from my daily driver, but since I don't think you are interested in a greasy ugly '73 Volvo engine that are almost stock, I think that I keep that picture for myself. :D

This engine has me drooling, a 308 cubic inch straight 6, I'm dying to hear this thing. Please tell me you have sound clips.

I have two, a 50 Plymouth Suburban wagon, and a 29 Desoto roadster, both Mopar flathead six engines. The wagon has a 727 automatic behind the flathead, the roadster will be a t-5 five speed.

I don't have a sound clip of it, wish I did.

What I really wish I had a sound clip of, is a mopar 230 flathead we built for tractor pulling around '99-'00. If you've never heard a 230 mopar screaming at 5500 rpms under full load, it is music.

Tractor pulling in the antique outlaw classes is what hooked me on inlines. They shocked me in ways I didn't think possible. Particularly the 230 flathead. And, its not all that special other than oiling mods to help it survive the high notes.

Not the prettiest mopar in the world, but it has earned its oats the hard way and at some unbelievable rpms. I carry a big torch for the mopar flathead. Some gorgeous ones throughout this thread that I'd love to hear purr too.

The tractor built to replace the Mopar. 292 Chevy with triple Holley/Motorcraft 5200's stuffed into a '51 WD Allis tractor. I'd like a sound clip of this one too, unbelievable. It cruises down the track at 5500 rpms also.

We need to build some better pipes, that's for sure. But it got us running, I tuned the carbs to them, so we've left them - LOL.

Farmers catch Hot Rod fever too.

I have a 28 Buick master a survivor that was an original hotrod in the late 40s. It has the master 6 engine with the updraft manifold flipped over and a downdraft carb. I still have alot of work to get it finished.

That sounds sooo sweet! Would love to see that. Would love to hear it even more.
I've got a 50 Chevy coupe that I would like very much to drop a 302 into. I've got a 228 I've been thinking of using for mockup duties, but I would wnt a lot more power.
How'd you adapt the 700R4 to it? db

Got the stock flat 6 in my 47 D-24, probably do something else later.....but I figure......if it aint broke.......and I am......Why replace it.

  17. I got a 258 that is going in to a fiberglass T-27, it got a 4 barrel Offenhauser Dual Port intake 600 Holley vac carb , built-by-friend-hedders a Crane Max Velocity camshaft and a fully ported head with V8-valves (2.02/1.60) Comp will be 10.5-11:1 when its done...

BUT it's not that sure it will be a 258 when it's finished, some ideas are banging around in my brain: It could end up as a 276-282 cu in engine (4.0 liter block 258 crank/rods)or maybe a 231(258 block 4.0 crank/rods),not really decided that yet, there are so many possibillitys with a AMC 6,just swap around some cranks, rods and pistons and You can touch down in a different county that You started from. But who knows ,turbo-charging could be fun:)

Lots of potential with the AMC's, there should be more of them built. I haven't played with one, yet. Whatever you decide on building - share the story. I'm looking forward to reading it.

  19. For sure there is potential, and now that You can buy aluminium heads and other cool stuff I suppose it will be even more interesting to look att these motors.

After all they are a relativly modern engine with 7 main-bearings high-nickel castings and so on.

The easiest way to make them perform is a head-swap to a 4.0 head (-91 and 3-4 years up are the best flowing) Then just add a intake/exhaust/carb and a healthy cam and finally som compression and You will end up with an engine that the guys att AMC never could have dreamed about.

55 235 in the modified, plans to put 2 carter yhs on a modified stock intake.
A fresh 250 on a stand. Trying to aquire a blower off a mini cooper. For the 32 chevy coupe project .
58 235 lumpy cam, solids, thickstun dogbone with carter yfs, fenton headers for the hoodlum,
    55 235 fresh std. pistons. 838 head,edmunds 2x2, maybe a hagr motor.
54 235 with fresh bore and turned crank.
    55 235 runable but tired.
58 235 with two pistons stuck from rain water.
51 216 never tried to turn it over, wouldn't surprise me if it did.

Damn, you guys got me all worked up about the Hemi-6. I went to www.hemiperformance.com.au/ and it looks like the Hemi-6 is more like a semi-Hemi, slightly canted valves like a big-block Chevy. I was hoping for ginormous heads and spark plugs in the valve covers, crap!

  25. Got a slant six in my Sr dragster. 244 cu inches, racer brown hydraulic cam , Ported head with bigger valves. Windage tray , Reworked Clifford headers and six snowmobile carbs on my own manifold.
Sixes are a lot of fun and much cheaper to run . Often they are just as fast and sometimes faster. Been involved with several over the last 40 years.

The 31 A to the left ran a 292 Chevy 6, Muncie 4 speed, Isky cam, Holly 4-Barrel, etc. AHRA Record Holder in 1964-5. It blew V8s away on a regular basis. Low end torque was teeth shaking.

261 bored 06 over, asymetric Bulldog cam, dueal stainless headers, clifford intake, Fish M3 carb.

Here´s a little film of the "cam run in" last week (still with the Road Demon on it). Sounds like a WWII fighter plane.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=_p8FmwAVuiA

With that Fish carb it sounds and feels way different - more like LPG or alkohol.

Never saw so much raw, brute power out of a inline 6.
