    Hey guys,

Along with a new 8CM (from a 52-53 Truck) for my next project, hopefully an AV8 coupe, I got an OD tranny that is supposed to came out from a 51 Mercury car. Since Im looking to install it on my 50 Merc I want to make sure it is what I think it is.
And if it didnt come out of a Merc and its a Ford.., what should I take care for ? just make sure I get a 51 Merc Bellhousing and starter plate ?

So far I could find :
    R10E_1A
    W.G.DIV.

Anybody could tell anything from this ?

    Thanks for any help
    Diego

A picture would help. Your '50 came with a transmission that resembles the pre '49 style with an integral bell housing, while the '51 has a detatchable bell. No big deal; you just have to have the '51 style bell housing and starter plate.

  3. R10 identifies the OD unit as a Borg Warner. this was pretty much the industry standard in those days, they had units to suit a wide variety of transmissions. take look on the transmission itself for more identifying numbers around the bottom of the top plate mounting flanges

I know Heathen, but what if its not a Merc Transmission but a ford ?
I read somewhere a 51 Ford tranny or the Ford bellhousing wouldnt fit My 50 Merc engine.

    Im attaching a few pics.

It looks like mine with the exceptions that it is missing the solenoid, go's behind the shifting levers and the lockout lever go's in the hole in the overdrive unit.

what do you mean 49-59 Mercury style. 49-50 were already different from the 51 tranny.

Go to our FLATHEAD V8 website (www.flatheadv8.com) and click on Parts Drawings & Schematics. Then choose the Transmissions link. From there you can click on all the parts drawings to ID your trans. The 4 bolt mount indicates 49 and newer for Ford, and 51 and newer on Merc. The Borg-Warner R10 was the basic number they used for this very common overdrive as used by many car mfrs back in the 50's. The pic of your shifter housing seems to be from a 52-54 Ford or Merc. Internally, they are the same.

Thanks Fortyfordguy, the shifter housing looks to be 51, also the tail.
What it doesnt look 51 is the mount.

Yes.., sure there "are". Problem is there lots of different housings for Ford and Mercury, not all quite the same.
If the tranny is a from a Ford and I try to bolt it to the engine with a 51 Merc bellhousing..., will it work ?

If the trans is from a 51 Merc, go bolt it with a 51 bellhousing I will surely have no problem..., I guess.

Where are the gurus when you need them........ :):p

btt ing is'nt gonna reallly help you ,,you need to do some homework,,There are not that many different bells for flat heads.
Start by measuring your trans bolt hole pattern,,then that of bells, can't tell by photos what bell is on your motor but if it's the 2 piece bell then all you need it to match up bolt patterns,,,most all of this stuff ford/Merc even Lincoln has a pretty good interchange set up
