This thread got me thinking- http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4700 I love seeing handbuilt cars, not just rods and customs, but all kinds. I know I've seen others online, anyone have some more?
Nothing new here as I've posted before, but since you asked for 'em. I built this car over several years (on and off) - what slowed me down the most (other than a lack of time and money) was having to also build the tools I needed (wanted). Along the way I found myself scratch building an English wheel, planishing hammer - whatever else I thought I "needed" and to help build that stuff I bought (for cheap) some machinery that I also spent time refurbing. It's quite a viscious circle. The best part has been meeting some REALLY cool people along the way. To anyone who might be thinking "no way could I ever do that" (whatever "that" is)- I used to think the same thing, but time has taught me that with a little determination, you might be surprised what you can pull off. Trust me on this one.
We did this one for a customer a couple of years ago. After some car show efforts it has been on the street for about a year now and is very driveable despite its appearance. It truly is handbuilt with a HD motor, Toyota gearbox and rear end and a bunch of one off parts. Please excuse Scott Kalitta's smiling face in the last photo but that is the best one that I have to illustrate the tandem seating arrangement in the car. Roo
Sorry to burst your bubble but Ryan didn't start garagejournal, and I'm sure he wouldn't try to take credit for it. He took over an existing community. I believe he made it better though... As for the homemade Hummer, I don't get it... A lot of work to end up with a Hummer...
Rooman, That thing is so freakin' cool. What a concept - and street driven - freakin awesome - I love it a little more every time I see it!!!! What's the horizontal shock for???
Jacin, the rear suspension is a triangulated four bar but the car is so small width wise that we used a link off the bottom of the housing to operate bellcranks hooked to the shocks. That allowed use to put the shocks as far outboard as possible. It is actually a rising rate deal that makes for a soft ride with no bottoming out on big bumps. Roo
garage journel is where a bunch of rich kids that have more money than carter had pills. that build huge warehouse type garage so they can polish their 500k car. Most dont even own tools, jist a place to park the lamagina. The typical garage is a half million dollars
I think a few have missed my point- I don't care that it's a hummer, more that he built his vision with a lot of craftsmanship. On my old computer I had saved a site that a guy ws hand building a ferrarri out of aluminum, really incredible. I think if you just shake your head because it's not a rod, you'd miss a lot of great metal shaping ideas. Rooman--that's pretty wild!
Sorry to imply Ryan started the garage journal. When it was started that's just what alot of people here said. I thought the hamb, the jockey journal, and the garage journal were ll Ryan's.
Yeah I'm a spoiled rich kid, bite my ass! You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.... He did indeed start the HAMB, the Jockey Journal was an offshoot of the Jalopy Journal/HAMB, the Garage Journal was acquired...
Yes there are some very pricey shops over there, but there are also a lot of small ,well thought out working shops. The thought of getting "ideas"from all of them is what makes the garagejournal work so well.If you are just going to look at a few and pass judgement on the entire board, then that is all you will get out of it.Pretty much the same as the HAMB.
That has to be the most beautiful thing I've seen since I've looked at my wife and kids.....KILLER JUST PLAIN KILLER!
the craftmanship on that forty is outstanding. Too bad many here won't appreciate it because it lacks the required rust, dents, flat/satin black paint. Others will feel it's not tradional because it's aluminum, and to new to have 'soul'. Ignore those. That Forty is one of the finest examples of metal working seen here or anywhere else.
Hand built? As opposed to what? Mine is hand built. Couldn't have built it with anything else. Maybe you should be more specific, huh.
