Hi all, A friend of mine went to Cuba - of all places - recently for a little vacation. (She's Canadian...Why she'd WANT to go there is a whole 'nother question...) Anyway, I asked her before she left if she could take some photos of some of the old cars, as everyone knows the island LOADED with them... She came back with a bunch of pics. Here are a few examples, but for MANY more, here's a link: http://www.huffreport.com/2007/cuba.htm I know this is a little off topic, but I also thought you guys might find these pretty interesting. I did... ENJOY...
Not only that they are there, but just being driven like Toyotas. Also, it looks like the land of ugly hubcaps/wheels. No Gassers?
You guys should check out the film called "yank tanks" its a documentary about the mechanics and people of Cuba who keep these cars running. Its truly inspiring...
I read once that a lot of the cars and taxi's in cuba use russian built diesel engines. Must take a lot of ingenuity to keep those ol' girls running..... " Toad, the man had me......" John Milner after the paradise road drag race...
OK, you've got me... What are Bluebirds? Are those the little buggy things outside that building??? I've been wondering all day... Kevin
blue birds are school busses......Made in Georga. I wonder how the hell the commies ended up with them? :-0
There was another post about Cuban cars earlier this year: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157654&highlight=cuba and there was this one too: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109879&highlight=cuba
Bluebird also builds buses in Brantford Ontario. Since Canada doesn't have a trade embargo with Cuba it is a possible source of the buses. Alex.
