Our fearless leaders in Lansing have found a way to jab us again!! Legislation has changed historic liscence renewals to 10 years for $30.00. Now that may not sound all that bad. But, it seems that ALL plates have to be re-upped by 04/15/07 at least that what the renewals on the five of mine say. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the plates were always due on my birthday before (August) and paid as the old one expired. NOT all at one time! First they chase off the car industry in Mich. Now it's the car guys.
They are pulling this shit because they claim it is for the new 'blue letters on white reflective plates' that are supposed to be so much safer and better for all involved. Yeah. How much longer before they try to take the 'Permanent' trailer plates since they aren't getting that cash each year like they used to. Are they still letting the 'Permanent' Historical Plates stay that way or are they making those guys renew as well?
From what I am reading in the propaganda sheet included ALL HISTORIC PLATES ARE DUE!!! Most of mine had years on them.
Do you know if this applies to Year of Manufacture plates as well?My Safari has them and I got it when they were non-expiring.It is stamped right on the registration. When it was first registered the fee was $15 for 5 years. They emended it in 1996(I think)to a fee of $35 and it was good for life(whatever that means). It was emended again(not sure what year)to $35 for 10 years but supposedly cars already registered were grandfathered.
I've had historic plates since back in the day. AND Everytime the re-legislate the rules. I have had to buy new plates. THERE IS NO GRANDFATHER in modern Michigan legislation. Just ask the guys that are fighting the GESTAPO zoning laws that Michigan is slamming down on rural dwellers! It was easy before computers. The state would issue a historic plate and in seven years would not be able to find it in the books. Been there several times!!!
The 10 year deal on antique plates went into effect a number of years ago and it hasn't changed. Confirmed that on the DMV web site. If you had the standard blue plates on your daily and they expired then you had to get the new standard plate. I didn't see anywhere that it had to be done before your normal expiration date. I just renewed my daily a month or so ago and got a new plate which I put on earlier this week. Not a very traumatic Charlie experience, other than it was colder than a well diggers ass outside when I did it.

While I don't like seeing license fees jacked up because the way they spend money, $3 a year doesn't seem too bad compared to the $78 a year I pay and I'm sure the California guys pay way more. Yeah Illinois has "antique" plates but they do have limitations on them. Bill
