I am a batchelor and am tight with money....You can eat cheap AND healthy... I go days without eating meat (besides fish)...lots of cheap instant oatmeal, tuna fish and crackers, I also usually make hummus and pita bread for dinner most nights, also black beans and rice... After awhile normal food no longer is so appetizing, almost gross. And the best thing I have found....stop eating when you're full...and don't waste anything. This time last year I was pushing 200 lbs, now I am down to a healthy 155 and guess what - no back probs anymore.

I'll have that six car garage soon enough.

Aldi is the shit! My ex-girl looked at me like I was a leper when I suggested that she could save a few bones by shopping there. Most of that stuff is top notch.

And yes, I've eaten dog food. Biscuits mostly. If you get used to them you can easily win bar bets.

    You guys get to eat?

You know some fast food places still have a saladbar and no cameras, and many will gladly hand over hand fulls of crackers with no questions?

Man, I thought I was the only one to optimize my grocery budget for the sake of putting money into cars. :D I need some money to get my Plymouth ready for the Hot Rod Cinematic in June, so I have been eating Ramen noodles lately, cheap and actually not bad. I never had Co-co wheats, they look pretty gross though.

Oh, and you can eat those ramen noodles dry as a snack, seriously, my friends daughter showed me that.

I was doing all right budgeting in just enough food for two to eat comfortably and still afford parts ... until my fiance started eating ORGANIC! Holy Shit! The checker scanned THREE items the other day and the bill was at $60 before I could blink!
I think we are going to have to redistribute the "grocery budget". She can pay for herself to eat like the queen of Egypt ... I'll pay for myself to live off balogna sandwiches. Guess which one TASTES better, though?

Sunday...Roast chicken, Smashed taters, biscuits and gravy.
    Monday...Beef pot roast with taters.
Tuesday...Spagetti with homemade meatballs and sauce.
Wednesday...Fend for yourself night. Wifes night out.
    Thursday...Buffalo steaks, baked tater.
    Friday...Swordfish, taters-au-graten.
    Saturday...Beans and weanies, brown bread.

Yeah, I did all that starving myself crap when I was doing a double major in college. Uncle Sam paid my tuition, but I paid for my books and fees, plus $1200 a month for a studio apartment in Boston. I swore I'd never do it again.

Rodding is no fun if you haven't got the strength to turn a ratchet.

You got that right,Kyle! My wife and I colect old cookbooks now---the only ones we get are the small.ringed type ---kinda like the chuch bizzare or a local Kiwanas would make up for county fairs and stuff. You should see some of the crap that's in some of those---possum stew--should I say more???

    YOU CAN AFFORD COCO-WHEATS ?!,..........

Any of you remember "MAY-PO" or "RALSTON"?
Things have been tight lately, and popcorn for dinner has not been uncommon,. Mac & Cheese last night,...... Oh yeah and just as a word of advice, In a Viet-Nam or Thi restaurant the term "Dog Food" takes on some unusual dynamics,...... just thought you should know that.

(As a afterthought,... if you get REALLY hungry you can always stand outside a animal shelter with a sign that says "animal drop off here" and make friends with a Thi Cook,...... or not)

    Co-co Wheats,
    Co-co Wheats,
    can't be beat!
It's the creamy, hot cereal with the coco treat!
    To be big and strong,
    have lots of fun!
    Eat Co-co Wheats, everyone!

    And then the parrot says:
    "Co-co Wheats, brock!"

I have this wierd thing with remembering jingles...

Hey, Dirty, I'm taking a nutrition course right now. I don't think that you're fufilling your daily nutritional requirements. I'm concerned....

Man, when Jenny and I first bought our house, Ramne Noodles, mac n' cheese, and Hamburger Helper. The neighbors are hunters, so we ate there quite a bit (still do). Now, I have a family (more on the way) so I can't let it get to that point. I'll starve myself but Mom and the kidz won't go without.

  20. Just buy rice. It's cheap. I ate a lot of it in grad school when our funding dried up.

Rice with brown sugar for breakfast. Rice with tomato sauce for lunch. Rice with cream of mushroom soup for supper.

Later I discovered you could buy one of those rice cookers for $20. It keeps the rice warm all week.

You can keep it in the garage -- close to your project.

They still make maypo???I love that shit......It was kinda like grits.....

  24. I lived for a week on a ketchup & mayo packets and white bread... You'd be surprised on how good KMB casserole tastes... Butter the bread with the mayo, put 4 slices in a casserole dish, put ketchup on top and repeat for 3 layers. then bake it. The mayo has oil and eggs so the bottom gets a little crunchy and you can eat it like pie.

Also, if you eat enough to make you ALMOST sick, the All-you-can-eat-lunch buffet (cheaper than dinner) on Wednesday can carry until you get your paycheck on Friday.

These recipes also work when it's buy beer or buy food.

Reminds me of National Lampoon's Vacation when Cousin Eddy says "I don't know why they call this stuff Hamburger Helper. It does just fine by itself"

Apparently I'm not budgeting myself tight enough. I think we should have some kind of competition. Whoever can cheap out the most in a month wins a Aldi gift card or something like that.

So far, this is the best O/T thread that I can remember, and if you really squint your eyes, it is kinda related to hotrodding.

im suprised no one mentioned welfare pot pies yet. . .

two slices of bread, wonder is best cause it squashes down well...

a slice of bologna on the bottom slice of bread, ketchup on top of that and if you like it spicy, add a lil mustard. top it off with the other slice o bread an toss it into the oven

eat like a king for a week or so off one loaf o bread an one package o bologna

  28. I had 2 roomates at the time, we all worked at Home Depot and we all got paid the same day, se we were all broke at the same time. We all ate it. They thought I was a genius for coming up with something other than ketchup/mayo sandwiches.

Those Porterhouses tasted extra good on Friday.:D

Some of my friends don't think that the little mystery shop jobs that I do are worth it. But every little bit adds up and helps.

I get to eat at TX. Roadhouse 2 times a year for free. Otherwise I wouldn't get to eat there at all! We only have one in our town, but if we had more I would be able to do 2 a year per store. I pay up front and get reimbursed up to a certain dollar amount only.

McDonalds every couple months when I can get these shops. Free value meal plus $10.00 payment. I have to do both the drive thru and dine in. So I get 2 value meals. Eat one and save one for later.

$16 worth of Albertsons food for free, at each of the 2 Albertsons stores we have, every 2 months. That's when I buy $32.00 of food to last as long as possible. I pay up front and get reimbursed $2.00 per store and paid $14.00 per store.

K-Mart shops about once a month. 2 stores here. Paid $6.00 and reimbursed $1.00. Not a lot of money to do these, but it usually only takes about 20 minutes. This is when I buy cheap non-food stuff I need.

Furr's cafateria 2 times a year. Again we only have one so can't do more than that. Reimbursed up to a certain dollar amount only.

And my favorite one is the movie theater trailer checks! Takes about an hour and sometimes I get to watch a free movie. No free popcorn though.

Several years ago I was living large on the dinner mystery shops. Tx. Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Applebees and Ruby Tuesday once a month! I had my sister sign up so that we could do each one twice a month!! All of them but TX. Roadhouse stopped doing the shops around here.

At first it was hard to put out the money to do some of these shops. But if you do enough mystery shops and merchandising you get checks about every week from something so it's doesn't hurt too much paying up front for dinners.

In bigger cities there are more places that do mystery shopping and people can probably find something to do every day or every other day. Not all free food shops, but the extra money adds up. And a lot of these shops can be done on your time, or at least during a certain time frame. All of the other merchandising jobs I do pay 6-10 dollars each and usually only take less than 30 minutes each.

With a regular job the extra money would go a lot further than it does now.
