Does anyone here have contact with Chip or anyone else involved in his P-32 build?

I looked the car over extensively at SEMA...but forgot to take a camera. I don't know that I am in love with the nose cone (and don't really care to get into that discussion here), but the rest of the car is exceptional. The extenive use of vintage parts really surprised me, although the colors and finishes are what really got me interested.

Here's my question. What finish is on the chassis fasteners? I think the steering arms, steering gear, etc are painted or powdercoated silver?, but the fasteners appear to be a satin plating, or maybe tumbled stainless? They are have a finish somewhere between zinc and chrome...just the look I am after.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Neal

  2. I can't help with the finish on the fasteners.

I'd sure love to know what color those wheels are though.

Aw, come on, you can't bring it up and really not expect comments. Coneheads comes to mind. Dagmars? Should there be a propellor on it? Great car but the cone ruins it.

All steel hardware that was used during WWII on aircraft was plated in cad 1 which is a satin silver color. Dont know if thats what he did though. Chad

I to looked over this car very closely and the attention to detail was outstanding. The uses of vintage parts was great, in regards to the chassis fasteners, I would say that they are nickle plated. That would be the correct period specific plating.

I don't think they are just polished steel...I have done thst on machine tools and it has a different look. This had a very uniform look as if it was a coating/paint/plating.

I am going to try some unpolished nickel plating and see how that turns out.

And yes, the car was packed with cool details, as was the Dynaliner (but that could be another post in itself)...

I've seen some brush nickle plated parts that were bitchin. They use the flapper wheels to get the finish and then nickle plate it. Similar to brushed stainless but softer looking.

Nickel usually has a yellow/gold tint to it. These were a semi-bright silver. My guess is they were cad plated.

You guys can dog on it all you want, but I like that car A LOT.

Even the nose cone that is making you '32 grille goobers turn your nose up.

The P-40 was (IMO) the best looking fighter of WWII and Chip did a great job of capturing some of that time period and translating it to four wheels. Can't wait till he fleshes it out with paint.

I'm betting that finish is unpolished nickel plating.

scooter.. post em up. Hope you got some high-res, I want to update my Wallpaper. :)

From the back, the chassis was painted a bluish- seafoam green. Did you happen to see it and find out the exact color?

The shifter was also pretty trick as it wrapped around the center of the dash. That was a 37 Lincoln Dash, no?

    - The color of the sky? Like the bottom of a warplane may have?

    - That was a Lincoln shifter too.

I dont think it was. The belly of a warbird was usually a lighter gray or off-white. The only light-blue ive seen under a bird was under a Hellcat. F4U Corsairs had the same dark navy topcoat as a hellcat, but usually had a light gray belly or they were monochrome. Of course, these examples were at air shows or the Smithsonian, so originally they could have a version of sea-foam greeen on them back in the day.

This color looked like a stock VW Bus color. If youve seen it, you know what im talking about.

I thought the same, as my dad's 40 coupe is that color...

    ...but Foose's looked a more blue/less green?

Exactly... VERY similiar to that color, but just a tad more blue. it was a very bitchin color. It wasnt gaudy when juxtaposed to the bare steel and olive drab. It looked like it could have been the stock frame color.

Only warbirds with blue or blue-green colors would have been those involved in maritime theaters of war.

Of which P-40s pretty much stayed out of. They generally had short range and weren't adequate for carrier or over-water duty.

I've seen lots of Warhawks, but none with any blue/green/teal coloration. I think it's safe to say that most P-40s were olive drab, some with neutral gray and many had camoflauge schemes painted in the field.

Airframe would have been largely zinc chromate. Maybe that clashed with the ochre/vomit-colored wheels? :D

Neal - your dad's coupe is badass...

    Just for you air guys...
I have a connection for anyone who is interested, my brother -in-law is a PR guy at the new Smithsonian Air Museum out at Dullas Airport in DC. I could put together a special tour for any HAMB'rs and find a special date where we could all meet up.
It is an awsome museum and lots of vintage to make you drool and stimulate the brain cells.
Let me know if any are interested in a day out there. I am thinking after the Holidays, maybe mid-January.
    Let me know

Hey Mike- I'm all about checking out the Dulles Smithsonian. Been to the old air & space on the mall so many times I can't count but have yet to get my ass out to Dulles.

I'm off 295 on the way up there. Keep me in mind.

Is it anything like the So-Cal Coupe's chassis parts? I believe I read somewhere that it was cad plated.

My guess would be that whatever level of finsh the metal is under the plating determines final product. Something like:

    Finish = texture
    Plating = color

What you're discribing sounds a lot like brushed chrome.

Yes I agree. I was thinking that maybe the parts were sandblasted, then plated? They had a uniform "grain" texture, not brushed.

I don't think you can get cad (as in Cadmium) plating anymore. I think everything now is zinc and I think the zinc is shinier?
