I’ve read a few threads, but trying to correctly id a front axle From the measurements I’ve found they appear to be the same for 32 heavy and the 33-36? Can anyone help ID this one?
Your 1st pic shows it all, on that axle (33-36) the flat boss for the spring perch is higher than the beam. On a 32, the beam is higher than the boss
End of a '32 axle in comparison to your '33-'36 axle. Note the axle is taller than the perch boss as previously mentioned along with the distinct shape of the end and beam.
Now that you can tell the difference, here’s a tip to make you look even smarter. Just call the 32 axle a 32 axle. No need to call it heavy. There is no light 32 axle. It’s kinda like when newbies call a Model A coupe a 5-window, when there is no 3-window.
I believe that they are interchangeable, the wishbones are different in length. extra information here if you’re interested. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/identifying-ford-axles-1928-1948.330648/
Wait, there is only one 32 front axle? I have always been told there was a standard used on the model Bs and a heavy used on the V8s. Wow, learned something new today
There has been extensive discussion on this forum about this…….. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/did-all-32s-have-heavy-front-axles.1082440/ Here in New Zealand, the model B’s all seemed to have light axles and the V8’s had the heavy. (they all came from Canada). Seems to be the case in some European countries also.
My early production B came with the real 32 axle from the factory (see I didn’t call it a heavy). I was the first guy to remove it from the car. After 32, when a car needed an axle replaced, the mechanic just walked to the shelf and picked up the 33-36 style cause it fits in the exact same spot.
Haha the 5 window sayings my favorite, I thought If I said heavy it made me cooler though. Good tip , I’ll get back to you after I check thye dizzy in my 1929 5 window with a flatty
No 3 window model A coupes, really. I've seen a picture of one. I believe the caption said that it belonged to Edsel Ford. Model A Ford Garage ~ Prototype Three Window Coupes
Back when you could find '32's in the junk yards I don't remember ever seeing one that didn't have a '32 axle; same with '32 frame hay wagons at farm auctions.
