    Long overdue update:

It’s been a while and I appreciated all of the suggestions everyone provided. With all of the mechanical obstacles the car was throwing at me body and paint work were no where near the top of my priorities list. So I came up with this solution- at least for now.

I absolutely loathed the LED trailer lights the previous owner had installed. They were pretty large and their placement wasn’t great. As a refresher- here is what I started out with. Not the best.

There were some significant holes left in the body to deal with once they were removed. I was wrestling with a lot of pressing mechanical problems with the car at the time so I wasn’t up for adding welding in sheet metal and paintwork to the list.

One not-super-original option I’d always liked were the 1950 Pontiac taillights. Their size was close to what I needed but the giant holes left nothing to mount them to. Then I came up with an idea. The old LED "pucks" were just pressure fit into a seal that went around the hole in the body. I wondered if I could make a wooden adapter "donut" that was the same size as the pucks and squeeze that into the LED seal in the body. After a little trial and error I made a pair out of plywood that worked.

Then I painted them and added recessed holes for the Pontiac mounting screws to go through. I had to make them donuts instead of having them solid so that the socket and wiring would go through into the car. Then I just put the Pontiac lights onto the plywood donuts, tightened the mounting nuts on the inside of the car and hooked up the wiring.

It’s not the perfect solution but it’s something I can live with for now while I keep picking away at the bigger issues.

ford-cortina-mark-1-one-mk-cnd-tail-light-lights-taillights-taillight-DD5EPN.jpg Late addition.. the English Ford Cortina had some tri-bar round tail lights that are very similar to the Mercury design and are fairly large. Some years were all red, others had the amber lens for signals. This light was also popular with aftermarket kit cars and performance sports cars in England, such as Lolas (pre Ford GT for example), TVR / Griffith, etc.

    Waayy better, nice save.
But the PO still put them in the wrong place . the old LEDs belong on a trailer. LEDs are excellent when they resemble an original early light.
