It is a long way from those old terrible society days... But there are/were highlights throughout history that brings a different culture to our current state of affairs.

In the movie “A Million Miles Away,” Hollywood made a great movie about a historic rise to becoming an astronaut.

“…a son of migrant workers who becomes a NASA astronaut…” In the movie, the story goes from their family’s history driving a 4 door Chevy sedan, the trials and tribulations of such difficult type of life. And then, the changes that transform over the course of the young son’s lifeline.

When we used to see this unusual item in several cars in the Westside of Long Beach, we all chuckled. Safety concerns? Being stopped by the CHP or LB Police was a sure thing. But, those steering wheels were there and continued to grow as accessory items for custom cars.

A welded, chromed chain link steering wheel was a popular item in the lowered, custom car scene.

 

The old joke was that with the tiny steering wheel, you could drive with handcuffs on.
