Technical 32 roadster outside door handles location

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by elroots33, May 19, 2024.

  1. Hello,
Can anyone of you can give me some dimensions to assemble the outside door handles on my 32 roadster ?
Some pics of the inside mountings will be welcome ! I suppose there are some plates and rods to connect the handles !
    Thanks !

I’d drill through the latch so the handle is in the exact spot needed.

Why do you need outside door handles?

  5. Outside handles are traditional. Shaved handles can be traditional also.

A car without outside door handles doesn't look finished.

Point was that if missing outside door handles are a faux pas then not having fenders and running boards would be completely unacceptable.

Highboys don't worry me, and I'll admit to not being a huge fan of them mainly because in Australia we have shithouse roads so fenderless is not a good idea, it's just to me looking down the side of a car's lines and not seeing a handle makes it look like someone forgot something.

It's certainly a personal decision whether your car has exterior door handles or not. It depends on the style and the era depicted during the build. My original '32 Roadster was a restored car when I got it in '06 but all I used was the sheetmetal and frame. I wasn't going to paint it or fill the holes left by the door handles, cowl lights, top rests or grill shell topper. Just my personal choice and it won't be changed.

  14. Sorry guys, my question is not "with or without" but where exactly, I talk about dimensions, must I put them, according to the original Ford location ?!
Actually, if someone of you got handles on his roadster, can he measure for me the dimensions of their location !
    Thanks !

  15. I started the other thread, but haven’t installed mine.

Do you have the latch mechanisms? Can you bolt them in the doors?

Do like was suggested and take a transfer punch, insert in the square hole from the inside of the latch mechanism and mark the inside of the door skin. This will be the location of the handle shaft’s hole.
Drill a small hole through from the inside where you made the transfer punch mark.
Enlarge from the outside, insert the handle assembly and plumb verticals the two mounting screw holes on the bezel.
Transfer punch and drill the two small holes.
Tack weld a threaded plate inside the skin and screw on the handle.

Here is a photo of a sketch showing the location, setting on a roadster door.
If the drawing isn't clear, it's 1.9" down from the bottom edge of the raised molding,
and 3" back from the door edge. These dimensions are to the 1/2" diameter hole center.

Well, it is an interesting question: door handle or no?
Considering that a 'Roadster' by definition has no side windows do most roadsters' lack an outside door handle?, they would be unnecessary. I have 3 roadsters (2 Nash Healeys and a Model T) in the shop right now that did not come with outside door handles, any other examples?

The 1928 roadsters did not come with them from the factory.

Henry was a miserable old coot who put off providing features/improvements as long as he could.

But people are pretty keen on his old cars anyway!

  23. The OP didn't ask what people thought about or what Roadsters came with external door handles so why derail his Thread, create your own and ask away. I hope he gets the handles fitted as they were
original equipment on 32 Ford Roadsters. Mine had them. JW

Good point, I saw that the proper measurements had been provided and thought he was good to go.
    My apologies.

  25. Thanks a lot xix32, that's exactly what I need ! Your dimensions are perfect !
About the other suggestions, thanks too, but I haven't any square hole in my mechanism, just little plates on which we can fix rods from inside or outside handles !
My body is steel made, from Sweden, I suppose mechanisms are a local making !
