Garlits saw the "handwriting on the wall" before the March Smokers Meet. He was contracted to not run on any California strip before going to Bakersfield, but he was tuning Setto Postoian's (sp?) blown motor the week before at Colton.

Can someone please tell me what the idea was behind having real-long header pipes? Scotty built us a set for our Gas Roadster and we went slower. We kept sawing them off at Fontana 'til it showed no more gain to be had.

And he got that blower from Ernie Hashim, whom Garlits credits for making his career. After Garlits started cleaning up with his blown motor, Ed Iskenderian called Hashim for a blower. Hashim said he didn't have any, and didn't have a mill to make the parts needed. A couple of weeks later a mill was delivered to Hashim's house, paid for by Isky.

  30. You would be surprised how many 33 Willys and 41 Willys weren't. got a 35 Willys? change to a 33 front clip. Got a 38 Willys change to a 40 or 41 front clip. These cars were used as gassers because they were light. but most of all the were super cheap pulled from junkyards or bought off of people.
