Gil Kohn’s ( RIP ) Circus…he kept a fleet of Funny Cars to bring in the crowds to his tracks in the Detroit area, Detroit Dragway and Motor City Dragway.. Still have this old shirt in my collection..
More Detroit Drag Racing History…More of Gil’s Circus..he knew how to keep folks coming to the track…these cars were kept at a airplane hanger in nearby Gross Isle and he had a car hauler that would bring them to the track to put on a show for the fans..I saw the Red Barn car a few years ago at the Detroit Dragway Reunion..The Red Barn was a fast food restaurant in the area, famous for it’s Chicken, and the restaurants looked like Barns, can still see them around Detroit today… Glory Days of Drag Racing…
Another local Detroit F/C….Gratiot was a big deal around here, but also nationally…kind of the first “Summit” with ads in all the major Car Magazines and a Speed Parts Catalog…I’m lucky to have an old Jacket, T shirt, and Catalog still…
Another local Detroit area F/C…The Gate Job ex Dyno Don Comet…Pete’s family owned a furniture store in Wayne, Mi, and he let a small shop in the back of it…This pic was taken at Milan Dragway…only “local” track left in the Detroit area…God we had some cool stuff back then…
