Changing water pump I found out why timing is off. If you look closely you will see damper against timing cover .
It has been this way for a while. Someone put a white mark on it to set timing.
    Way off factory setting.
So order a cover and balancer. Set timing and hopefully good to go. 445356273_7982647881759428_8529176226385920134_n.jpg 445454709_7982648031759413_2830620119886834618_n.jpg 445573805_7982648161759400_3951987191017282405_n.jpg

  3. When you say rubber are you talking about seals or something else?

With the engine at TDC is that mark right? If not, re-mark it, re-set it and move on... I for one won't fight with a harmonic balancer more than I need to.

    @larry k Fixed it. {damper}
It will get new damper and timing cover. I will check and reset timing.

@chryslerfan55 There's a rubber ring that goes between inner and outer ring. Mine slipped and sent the outer into my timing cover. failed_harmonic_balancer_34.jpg

We saw this failure repeatedly at Complete Auto Repair. IIRC was mainly on GM products and Chevrolet V6s especially. It can be difficult to diagnose if you haven't seen it before. Definitely requires replacing the harmonic balancer/pulley.

May as well change the timing chain while you’re at it. They are usually pretty sloppy

Yep... If you're digging that far in, I would replace the timing chain too.

And a bigger cam. While you have the manifold off you might as well put a better one on. And the carb. And, and...

Yeah guys I know. I will change timing chain. That's it.
Not going down the rabbit hole of cam and lifters. Next it would be change heads and then I might else well pull it out and rebuild.
This is my work truck. Daily driver. I won't take it apart for very long.
It's not my only vehicle but the 31 ford truck is not very practical most days.

Mopar slants have also been known to have the outer ring slip like that. There are outfits that can rebuild them with polyurethane in there, rather than rubber.

My son in law just had the same problem in a 61 Olds with a 394. Down here its darn near impossible to get one, so I got on here and someone recommended The Damper Dudes in California. Quick turn around and super helpful, cheers

I lost the pulley off my 230 Dodge flathead in my single seater several years ago. Got a small steam puff out of the louvers, looked down at the temp gauge and then got a face full of antifreeze when it popped the hose off the radiator.

Now pray the timing cover doesn't leak at the bottom corners! Every time I tried to replace the timing cover without removing the oil pan it leaked afterwards.
Had a almost brand new dampener toss the outer ring off my 468 BBC in my Falcon gasser! Luckily it hit the frame and only tossed the belt off, but didn't hurt anything else. And luckily I was maybe 40 ft. from home too.
