a tribute to the independence of the women of the 50s coming into the limelight...

    Hello,

After going through my wife’s mom’s old photos, we had found a cool looking photo from one of their many cross country forays back into So Cal from the OKC. It was around the early 50s and there were already two cars in the family of 5, living in inland Pacoima.
    upload_2023-5-26_6-47-58.png
As it was the early 50s, independence for women was just beginning. Own jobs, other than being housewives/moms and own cars in the car happy So Cal environment. The two old cars were in the small two car garage, but for some reason, my wife’s mom bought her own car. No longer "hand me downs"... and, what a cool car it was. A 1947 Buick Convertible!
    upload_2023-5-26_6-49-10.png
My wife remembers it as a Pale Yellow in color. Since it was usually sunny and hot in Pacoima, it was perfect convertible weather in So Cal. So, she liked that the drive was usually top down and the wind swirling all around. Some days, it was a hair bandana to keep the hairdos in place, but other times, the wind just made driving cool and pleasant.

Recently, another thread showcased several different Buick convertibles.
    upload_2023-5-26_6-49-53.png
But, our favorite tie in with women and convertibles was with the real life “Gidget.”
    upload_2023-5-26_6-50-38.png photos Surfer Mag web
But, researching surf history and forms of transportation, the photo of Kathy Kohner Zuckerman popped up showing her loading or unloading her single fin longboard at world famous Malibu Surfrider Beach from the rear of her 1946-47 Buick convertible. Malibu was the home of the movie, Gidget. “The Gidget” in the movie was the real life, edited version of Kathy Kohner Zuckerman’s growing up years. Yes, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman could actually surf, so no need for a green screen.
upload_2023-5-26_7-2-10.png Prime parking along PCH in Malibu...
The Gidget movie shows what her life was as a teenager growing up surfing in Malibu and the surrounding areas. The photo was taken on Pacific Coast Highway, right in front of the world famous, Surfrider Beach at Malibu Point. These parking spots are the premium places. It took us many times to figure out when to get there from Long Beach, for the pristine Southern Hemisphere waves. But, once there, it was open the doors between surf sessions for the best seats in the house. (besides riding those great waves)

So, perhaps, their 1947 Buicks could have used a 50s styling for their cool So Cal rides:

upload_2023-5-26_6-54-46.png less scallops, more 50's style

  15. A coupe sketches I did while riding shotgun to Cheyenne. One is a sketch I finished up from a few months ago, the other is explained below…

    IMG_3630.jpeg

This was supposed to be a simple quick sketch of an improvised little building we passed near Grand Island , NE. It looked like a very unsafe kid’s club house since I took some liberties and turned it into a shop. An unsafe shop…( note the ford in the corner…
