Projects 1940 Willys Coupe Gasser Build

Yes, truly amazing. Unfortunately the EMS floor patch panels I'm working to install in my Ranch Wagon won't look anywhere as nice as your work. Thank god for carpet. In my case it's "What the eye don't see the heart don't grieve" but not in your case for sure. Thanks for the updates.

Got the doors gapped now onto the front end

What were original Willys gaps like?

 

Well, since I've had to replace parts of roof, both quarters, rear window openings, a pillars, the gaps were pretty off, in some spots almost 1/16th other spots maybe 5/16. Now all at .230 thou

 

Well the front-end is interesting. The previous owners spent so much effort to make this steel body look like glass. The front end was welded together so I had to buy replacement center section, cut out old and sneak up on edges removing welds. I'm almost done with first fender

 

Right fender and rocker are good enough to send to chassis. On to left side then hood and rear fenders

Preliminary fitting of hood, had to rebuild hinge first, need to set rear gaps first, it's a challenge as the front end is "free floating " til I get a jig then chassis to hold it all in place.

 

Got hood close for now, once it's all braced I can dial it in better

 

Started mocking up drivers rear fender, getting close

I guess Im OCD but my chassis guy is such a nut and so OCD it has made me up my game. Last thing I wanted was for people to see the stuff I did and then see what Al did and say whoa big difference haha

 

Rear fenders mounted! Last major hurdle before my date with the chassis shop

 

One of last things to do was reconfigure the door latches, I wanted to go back to original so here's the progress on drivers side

 

Well its ready to go to chassis shop now, just waiting for opening, another couple weeks I'm told.

As much as I'm into chassis' and I'm sure it will be a nice one, this will be a hard act to follow.
Are you familiar with the black 40 Willis coupe Burns Wagoner had years ago?
For me it was the gold standard.

Burns' car was black also, had polished Halibrands, real big rears and smalls, don't recall the rest of the particulars.
I think this car was owned by a guy named Parks but not positive, a lot of water gone under the bridge, as they say.

I didn't catch guys name but I took these pics last year at Pomona. This car is my gold standard, I've never seen a coupe this perfect, it was truly flawless
