This old racer is just so interesting. What a find.

The parts pile is incredible. A story to be told, someone must know its history. Fire off a note to Coastal 181 Books, they are from that area and have a huge photographic data base.

Looks like he probably started out running Chevy sixes, and then moved up to GMC s.

  4. If someone buys this, I’d be interested in buying any of the GMC 302 extras - Head? Crank? Rods? 302 specific speed parts?

  7. Generally there were classes of weekly racing, Modifieds and Sportsman (NASCAR) some outlaws track call them A class and B class.

Modified/Class A rules allowed the use of multiple carburetors, fuel injection, superchargers, fuel (alcohol) magnetos. Unlimited cubic inch

Sportsman/Class B cars were single carburetor gasoline, battery ignition, and a cubic inch limit.

Fonda (opened 1953) the top track in this part of NY and serval were NASCAR Sportsman only until mid year 1965, and went NASCAR Modified to break up a driver boycott.

After they went Modified Fonda ran mix fields with a handy cap Sportsman started to the front, Modifieds in the back.

How many projects can I stand?

Note the safety (Floater full floating rear end) hub on the right front, a common oval track rule as the right front took the most stress from weight transfer in the conners.

Save the trailer! It has "wide-5's" too!

  12. New bearings and a clean-up will fix that trailer right up. It looks like it has the same wheels as the front end on the car.
    Instant spares.

  13. It’d be fun cruising to work looking thru chicken wire

when did these start showing up?
And the recipe for these wide 5 hubs on a larger truck rear end.

  16. The Timken Floaters have been used from post WW II right up into the 1980s I am sure some people used them later then that.
Getz made gear sets way down in the 6:00s range 1/4 oval track gear.

41 Ford 3/4 ton truck came stock with iron wide five hubs, the aftermarket started making aluminum hubs/drums.

Some of the earliest were made by Michigan Safety Racing commonly know as Safety Racing the set up I have on my car.

By the early 60s there were several companies producing aluminum wide five hubs the most common was Frankland some people used the stock iron Ford drum, but most used Buick Drums machined to wide 5 and redrilled the Buick backing plates for use on the Ford spindles.

Frankland even made their own copies of the Buick drums

Dad says he doesn't remember seeing disc brakes until the late 60s early 70s, but the car looks to be from an earlier era, but lots of racers get out of driving or owning yet still worked on, built cars and up with modern for the time parts.

  17. Thanks.
I’ve seen the large truck rears used on round track relics
    They turn up here occasionally
    But not the fancy stuff.

  18. Some classes, tracks and sanctioning bodies didn't allow quick change rears (The modern 10 spline Champ rear is based off the Timken rear).

Quick Changes rob power too, it was not uncommon for races on big tracks like Syracuse (one mile dirt) Langhorn (one mile dirt), Nazareth Pennsylvania (1 1/8 when dirt) guys would swap out their quick changes in favor of a split floater rear.

That turbocharger looking doohickey looks to me an awful lot like a modified detroit diesel water pump.

Robert, I hate to correct you, but the company name is FRANKLAND. They are the Cadillac of wide 5 drum brake hubs.

I watched a movie of this stuff recently...full race from '49 I think....100 cars!!! and 90 of them were '39 Ford coupes! I'm not kidding...at the end of the race 20 cars ended up in a flaming pile of wreckage! no serious injuries but some serious racing action!

  26. Yes, I had brain fade on that one, a lot on my mind outside the H.A.M.B. hot rod, race car world. I let the auto spell take over and didn't proofread before I posted.

I had a set of "odd ball" hubs out of the late 50s I can't remember the company Eddleman maybe?

I sent him a message, it was in my neck of the woods, but I was on the fence.

I could have scraped up the cash to do it, but I would have cut me short, it's cool and there are a lot of parts, but it's a Connecticut car likely with no historical connection outside of New England, and there are a lot of parts, but they could have lived a very hard life.

Oval track engines, transmissions, and rear take a fair amount of punishment due to the amount they have to work the throttle. The engine in an oval track sees a lot of R.M.P. changes. That on and off the throttle can be tough on the drive line transmissions and rears, as are rough tracks, heavily rutted dirt kill rears.

I’ve a block and 2 cranks I’ve been trying to give away. A military pan which has the reinforced pan rail too. If I still have them come August I could keep them in the trailer when we go to Bonneville. I have no way to crate or move them on a pallet.
