And make a good line or two in a song. Oh wait, been used before;)

  4. Well I would have lost a sizeable bet on having someone paint your car as I just knew it was gonna get pinstriped!
Suggestion on your next adventure carry some of that flex glue they advertise on the tube.
Jim can you post the final results & or a pic or two.? Some of us less fortunate ones do not have Instagram.
Thanks for bringing us along & may the wind always be at your back.

sure, here it is. They said at the finish that I got 3rd place, but today they said I got second place. Doesn't matter, of course, it's all for fun

yeah, the Louisiana armory. Wish I hadn't been fixing my car the whole time, and had some time to look around!

  8. Thanks Jim. That chevy shouldn't qualify as it is too new in my opinion.,

this isn't an "old car" rally, it's a LeMons Rally. And the word has different meaning to different folks. But apparently a 59 Rambler is pretty far up there, as far as being a LeMon.

  11. One person instead of multiple people, an older lemon of a vehicle with no floor, questionable brakes, bailing wired clutch & super long distance driving should be #1 in my book.
I just happen to know a bit about such adventures. I have driven my 32 roadster over 85,000 miles in white outs W/snow & ice, super strong winds in AZ, blew the hood off, lighting rain & hail storms & with one hand in my shirt for a sling due to rotator cuff injury across the US of A. SO squirrel you sir are # 1 in my book. Jim as you can see in my profile you are in good hands. :)>)

I use map, GPS, and google maps app on the phone. as well as trying to keep tabs on where other cars are. And talk to my wife/kid and get them to help me find stuff. Having a navigator along with you is much smarter, my brother David is good at it, but hasn't been on a Rally with me since we took the LaSalle in 2018.

Was the LaSalle trip where you guys were dressed up like undertakers? I thought that was a cool pic.

yeah, that's the one. I dressed up like a nerd when I took the Rambler out to California, but on the river run, I didn't have any theme at all. Which means a second place finish is pretty good!

you can't be a proper Rambler owning nerd, without doing some economy accounting, right? So I got out the slide rule, and went to work....

    mileage river.jpg

The fuel total cost was $938.93.

Only one nibble on the car so far, but hey, there's lots of time for me to keep dropping the price!

My 62 classic sw with 196 gets 19 to 20 mpg at 70 mph. But I have a T5 and 15 inch wheels.
At 70 mph we are revving about 2500 rpm.

Mine gets similar mileage without OD, about 3200 at 70. The engine is so small it doesn't let it use much fuel, even at higher rpm.

also, my 59 came with 15" wheels. It has 3.78 rear gears. I think the gear ratio is just perfect for the car...although it's hard for most folks today to accept that an engine can spin that fast and work fine and last a long time.

My wife has an OT little modern car that has a 6 speed manual, and still revs over 3500 at 75 in 6th gear. Kind of changes one's perspective.

    Jim,
Before the T5 install I had same gear ratio and got about the same mileage.
The engine has 60 over pistons and a reground cam. It doesn't burn or leak oil.

Considering that most V8 cars on 1959 were getting more like 12-14 mpg, 20 probably looked pretty good.

Yes, Ramblers were known for their thriftiness. Mostly bought by cheapskates, I think

  29. Not cheapskates, Jim. Frugal folks!
