Guys - My old Holley 1 BB carb was making me crazy, so I bought a Carter YFA knock-off that works like a charm. However, it's taller than the old one and with a cheapo air cleaner, the hood won't close. Has anyone found a lower profile cleaner or drop plate that'll work with the 2 and 5/8ths opening? (A hood scoop would look silly on my '59 Rambler!) Tha nks!
Got a side picture of your air cleaner? The current base on the air cleaner looks like it has a built in riser, maybe make your own air cleaner base from a aluminum sheet
There are plenty of "low profile" aftermarket air cleaners available from Summit, Jegs etc! If nothing else purchase the complete air cleaner & just use the base, or if you are feeling ambitious...Make a base yourself! Yes...Having a 55 Nash, a hood scoop would look stupid! If you want to keep it open element, try spot welding a 1 barrel air cleaner "center section" in to a 14" drop base air cleaner [this would drop right over the carb]
Or go the other way...put something that looks like an early outboard cowl on the carb...and cut your "Rumbler" hood to have something like this peeking through. Photo coutesy of @FishFry.
COOL! Now that's an air cleaner what IS an air cleaner...to paraphrase Larry Fine. Looks like a 40s vintage when there was room under a hood.
Looking at that picture reminded me of when I had to change oil and filter in those old Ramblers! Hated it, very messy! I cussed Rambler many times! Thanks for that memory….that I had actually forgotten! Lol Bones
The battery has been moved to behind the rear seat in a box. We were trying for electric power steering but could not fit the PS unit in the engine bay. My partner in the car fabricated the manifold.
How much space do you need? It looks like you could gain close to an inch just swapping the stud and wingnut for a bolt.
the oval holes were cut years ago. I finally found a hood scoop that covered the air cleaners and looked traditional for a shoebox, a ‘52-54 Mercury hood.
