Well my pops finally broke down and just bought a runner!!!! He’s 79 and his health isn’t good, so he’s never going to finish his 40 convertible so he bought this 39 rare four-door Convertable sedan….too bad it has a Chevy set up since he’s a Ford motor guy lol!!! Believe it or not his wife talked him into it, she said that he deserves it after all these years of helping everybody else. He said he didn’t think he deserved it. I don’t know where he gets these ideas from! I’m glad for him! although…I think he’s gonna lose his license soon, and I think since he is a Hot Rodder he is just gonna die if that happens. But he scares the crap out everybody when he drives. It sucks! he's Scared now!
Hey guys! Yeah it’s been a while lotta honeydews and dealing with late model cars…buying and selling fixing them up getting them ready etc. Any Hoo!! I finally got the rest of the shell Sanded and buffed… but it sure looks good! Rustoleum 101 Class!!! 400-600-1000-1500-2500-3000! And a lot of Rubbing compound (all by Hand!) ouch!!!
I go even shorter with the pin so that the grub screws seat in the shaft and lock the shafts in place firmly. I think the shaft jiggle pumps out the oil. Once firm a wipe of sealer on the ends and never had any leak yet.
My Pops took his new ride to a small Run at a Golf Course near his House up in the Foothills. He os to Nervous to drive it Down in the Sac Valley. Poor Guy!
I have to treasure these moments I don’t know how much longer he might be around…. This 39 is traditional as far as the body is concerned everything stock so I think it fits here at least for now…..
Plugging away! Boy these windshields are a pain in the butt!! I broke my new window trying to get it to fit in the channel!! Tried lube tried everything! The setting tape was too fat and the new windshield didn’t have beveled sanded edges so it kept tripping and then a cracked on me!!! So I ended up using the original windshield which has a few BB chips in it and a scratch or two but hey it’s good old school glass!! Then the rubber didn’t wanna seat! Kept popping out of the channel on me every time I wanted to lay it flat in the window opening!!! So finally I took the hinges off laid the windshield flat clamped it with some “C” clamps and rubber, and then put the hinges on! I sealed the original tack strip with some bulkhead marine sealer that hardens like rubber. and I put my new rear window frame in nailed it to the body and glued it with the same bulkhead stuff!! so it ain’t ever going anywhere!!
I decided Im using as much as the original windows as possible, since the glass seems way more tough! Also the window channels weren’t that bad once I cleaned and painted them. I epoxied the glass back in the one that came out, and Repaired a chunk that broke out on the bottom, of the other one, (that I broke because it wouldn’t come out of the channel!) The curved body, hides it. All good! I just got to figure out how to sand and polish the edges of the Rough cut glass that I got for the doors! I think you need diamond paper or something it’s hard as hell!!!
As much of a pain it is to go back to the glass shop, they are your best bet to get the edges polished. Keep up the good work, -Abone.
You can hand water sand it with 320 then 400 then 600 but it will take a long time. Using any type mechanical sander will get it to hot & crack it. Be quicker and easier to find a glass shop but they won't be responsible for the glass if it cracks.
Got One Rear qtr in! Nice and tight! Smooth.... just need to glue, and Screw the top rubber channel seal!
Little on the late side, but years ago, when I was chopping an OT convert, a friend in the glass business offered to help. Found out I could cut the w/s as well or better than he could - he wasn't enthused about it(but showed me a couple of tricks for curved glass), but I was - & he did the 1st sanding on his big belts. They wore out fairly quickly, & weren't cheap. So I took the glass home, & used a d/a sander w/3M-wet-or-dry paper. & kept the sanding wet w/a spritz-bottle. Worked very well, although kinda messy. Use a light-touch w/the d/a. Wear old clothes... or at least an apron. I probably started out w/~180, then 320. Don't remember what I ended with, but iirc, I found that as the paper wore, I could go back over the previously sanded edges w/the worn stuff & it'd smooth things out more. Just a time thing. I didn't see the need to "polish" the edges, but I did take them somewhere 'twixt just-smooth & polished. Marcus...
I have done the same with a DA and wet/dry paper. Takes care and time, but I always seam to have more time then money. I start with 180, water with a dash of Dawn and end with 600. Never went finer as just getting the rough edges off was the goal.
Checking in! Been awhile! Got distracted with my new toy! 2 years waiting!!!!!’ (better include a picture of the doll so I don’t get booted!) THANKS MOM!!! I hope she is smiling down, from Heaven?…I’m sure she is! None of this would’ve happened Without out her…. The Doll Progress, the Dream Bronco… Miss her…
I love long, detailed build threads like this. That Rustoleum paint job looks slick. Keep it in the garage or covered, and it will last a long time. It will probably withstand a few more rub-outs. I’ve thought about using this, now I probably will.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! My HOT-ROD Buddies! Thanks For Sticking with My Long…. Thread! But You guys get it. Nobody around here gets it!
Lets see it on the road this year! I love the new bronco you got. It needs a solid axle swap in the front though, maybe a locker in there too.......lol
Nope! Its so… smooth, Save the Solid axle for the HotRod! Its the Sasquatch package front and rear lockers, 4:47 gears!
Finally Finished the Dvr rear window! Didn’t like the cheap foam top seal… So I cut, and pieced regular Channel I had extra… also used my old school style canvas wire loom tape to simulate the old canvas between wood, and metal surfaces… so hopefully no squeaks and groan’s going down the road! I like the way it turned out. That window has no lateral movement!
Almost got the Passenger Rear done! Just the wood cover on the end, and The Frame. Then bolt in the 2 tack strips, put the rear seat back in, and Start on the top! (I’m stalling on the doors, can you tell?)
On s roll again!! Except for the wife is a had it with me working in the garage this weekend lol!!! Geez I did some honeydews this Weekend!!
Along with the card, my dad sent me for my birthday (tomorrow) He sent this picture of the 33 back in 1980 coming back from a rod run. It had some stance that’s for sure !
Got my black canvas in to accentuate the exposed bows on the inside, so now I can see what it look like on the outside The dome light is working.. I cut a groove in the top of the bow to hide the wires. rolling right along. Gotta do the vinyl next!!
