Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by j hansen, May 3, 2020.

  1. What grit and in how many steps did it take to get them this far? Do you finish with a buffer?

I figured out the location of the tie rod, and bent the steering arm on the pass side to clear the drop axle and locate the tie rod above the wishbone... Steering arm 1.jpg Steering arm 2.jpg

Not quite today but 2 weeks ago, the last of the warm weather for painting. Filled, epoxy primer and then feather fill for my coupe. 257C5A93-7193-4690-A011-80E8CD634102.jpeg 4430AB3E-E2F1-418D-8A0B-920F34F72C8F.jpeg 68A178D9-056D-4A74-B38E-EC12FF7B25F8.jpeg

Took a couple leafs out of my front springs on my Austin gasser to slightly lower the front, but also to soften the ride. That worked great, and accomplished what I wanted. But after a few weeks of driving I hit some decent bumps the other day and the front shocks bottomed out. When I got home I took a look to make sure the shocks weren't hurt, and noticed I only had about 2.5" of shock travel.
So I got in the shop and fabricated new upper shock brackets. My old brackets were welded on the frame at the top edge of the frame, so I had to make the new brackets about 5" tall with gusseted sides so the mounting point could extend above the frame. Got them fabbed up, and rolled the Austin into the shop to cut off the old mounts, and install the new mounts. Of course it couldn't ever be as easy as that. I quickly noticed my frame mounted fuel pressure regulator and hard line to the dual carbs was routed just above the passenger side shock mount. So had to relocate the regulator, line, and make new mounting points for it too.
Finally got things out of the way, cut off the old brackets, and installed and painted the new brackets. Have about 4.5" of travel now, so it wont ever bottom out unless I start jumping curbs with it.

I got the 5 point cage tacked in place on my dragster. Lots of angles and dangles to deal with! I know it's not perfect but after I add the helmet tubes, a bit over 1/2 way up, I think it's all built to specs. I'll probably never try to get it certified since it will likely only be raced at a non-sanctioned track.

^^^^^Too bad we can only give one "like". Looks great and it appears it has some pretty significant metallic in it! It should sparkle in the sun.

Looking forward to seeing it all together.

Thanks Lynn. You will still finish the dragster before I get her car done.

    Exhaust was smelling little fat.
So i did a quick idle mixture adjustment, and it sounds much smoother and dont smell anymore.
Offcourse great reason to take test drive...

I'm really digging the looks of this one. Hope you start a thread on it when you get back to it.

Looking thru this thread always makes me feel like a slacker. Only got the nose opening cut to my liking today... DSCN1590.JPG The opening matches the wire hoop now! BFD, right?

I accepted a challenge from my wife; the last three years of a particular event, I took the coupe. She "suggested" I bring something different next year.... Truth be told, I probably needed the nudge to get busy on it anyway. That's the kind of Honey Do list I can live with!!

Had a childhood friend visit for a couple days that I haven't seen in 15 years and we spent one day making the rounds in the Studebaker and one evening in the shop letting him cut a Lexan window as I can't hardly see anymore. When we finished we had a roughed in window that goes up and via the Military surplus belt. Still a lot of details to work out with the window , but so much closer to passing tech. I have a goal of Dec. 3rd to be ready for a race/swap meet at Farmington dragway. DSCN2625.JPG DSCN2626.JPG
