Seems strange to have a tie rod that is welded in the middle...All of mine are threaded one piece tubes....No welds to break....

Jesus Lord, so glad you and the car didn't get hurt too bad.

Thank you for sharing. I think this will compel many of us to make the effort to be more aware.

Time to go to church and thank the Hot Rod God. Really glad you weren't
hurt or your car damaged. It's a beauty. Wonder where all that infrastructure $$ is going?

Wow, beautiful car. I looked at a weld the other day that would have been one of our first welds. I took it apart, gouged out the weld and redid it. After reading this I will relook anything suspect and run another pass on it - like our rear lower shock mounts a previous owner modified. Every time I look at them I will think of this story. Time to redo.

I’ve searched high and low and gave up. I would pay a small fortune for white rubber running boards…..if anyone out there is listening

I think you’d want the weld Xrayed?
But the jolt he took probably was gonna mess something up.

That is a sweet ride, I'm glad you and the car are still with us! This is a lesson to all of us, know the history of our steering components. If you don't, plan on replacing them! There are probably hundreds of these "old school bubble gum fixes" out there,
    just waiting to happen!

  19. Oh Man dodged a bullet!! that weld looks like it wasn't.
Not to alarm you, but I think I would look very closely at that front axle. I may be wrong, but isn't that a cast axle?

Glad to see you are alright, J

This thread reminds of what the old blacksmith who taught me to arc weld said , just because you own a welder , it don,t make you one !!! And if you have to grind your welds , that makes you a grinder , not a welder !!! so when it comes to suspension and steering. “ nuff said “.

  22. Beautiful '34. You are fortunate to be alive. That could have been much worse. That tie rod probably would held up fine for years if you hadn't hit that pothole, but steering components need to be strong enough to withstand hitting a pothole, because it's inevitable you will hit some at speed.

I sure hope that you are not expecting that one part was the only part done like that. I would suspect everything in the front and rear suspension at this point. You got lucky once, don't push your luck for a second time. Really inspect everything.

Most likely, the part was welded well, but then someone didn't like the weld build up so they ground it off smooth and painted it pretty.

Well the comments are correct , when welded properly safe as a solid tube . The correct way is to cut the length off a threaded end and retread not cut in the middle and stick it back together .

I can tell you I have stuck lots of lengths of pipe together , the welds were x ray tested and are stated to be stronger than the parent metal of the pipe . All of the pipe welds were hydro tested for stress also . I really think you are the luckiest man on the planet at the moment she gave up the chase .

This is a prime example of because many think they are a pro , doesn’t always provide you with SAFE workmanship . This very easily could of killed many .

I just saw this and I am both appalled at the welded tie rod and thankful that you are alright. Ok, make that thankful that you and the car are alright. Scary shit right there!

Looks like a piece of thin wall tubing for alignment, and then about 30% weld penetration (if that), none of which got to the useless slug. I'd be crawling all over and under that beautiful car looking at everything suspension and frame related. This tie rod breaking could be the canary in the coal mine.

When ever joining two pieces of tube leave a slight gap , fill the gap with your weld . Weld the slug and two pieces into one . This is the last resort , cut it to length and rethread or have a new one of correct length made

Time for some new 1 pc tubes to replace that stuff. This is becoming all too common and has been happen with alarming frequency over the last dozen + years. Loose fasteners ("I don't wanna chip the paint/chrome), garbage fits filled with mud, urban legend engine tuning and carb mods, and I bitch about this stuff and have been called a snob for it. Well that's a badge I wear proudly. You can fix this from front to back and I'd bet a slip roller you're doing that rt now...;)
