Curious about approximate value of a 59ab flathead in complete original condition that has been in a climate, controlled environment. All standard and complete, not stuck! Thank you-

I've been told that unless you have a report on the condition of the block (Magnaflux or machine shop invoice), a fair offer is $300-450. The parts are worth at least that, and then internal conditions can dictate value beyond that.

I should have been a little more specific. A complete engine with standard bore, crank std-std, non rusty/crusty... With proof that it has been magged in good shape, and in a climate controlled garage for the last 50-60 years, not yard art.

My estimate doesn't change much. Actually, a yard art condition flathead is worth 100-250 because the likelihood of catastrophic internal damage is higher. The flathead is only as good as it's foundation, so having a good block boosts the value. If the engine you're looking at is complete, I'd say pop the heads off and do a visual inspection of the block surface and see if you see any visible cracks, it might be apparent right away that it has issues. That's easier than the alternative. In order to magnaflux a block, the machine shop would need it totally torn down and they hot tank it first to get clean surfaces to inspect.

Mag is a good sign. To get top dollar, it needs to be pressure tested as well. I'm not trying to beat you down, but $300-500 depending is generous unless you are willing to refund the money if the block turns out to be no good.

That means stripped down, studs removed, water passages thoroughly cleaned out, the block is magg'd and pressure tested. Magging is the first step. Pressure testing is the next step.

If you've done all this, then the price jumps to $800-1,000 with all documentation of the work and passing these tests.

8BA complete engine. 15 minutes away. Pretty good deal. $200.00 No visable cracks. Most valves froze/stuck beyond belief. 10 hours in dissaemble. Still not all the valves out and I know what I am doing 3 /4" breaker bar and pipe to jerk cam back and forth to get valves up to remove cam. Crankshaft surprise. Drill out 2 broken center main cap bolts. About $200.00 plus to mill the block bottom and alinge hone a replacement center main cap. 2023-01-10 20.10.58-4.jpg 2023-01-10 20.10.58-5.jpg 2023-01-10 20.10.58-6.jpg 2023-01-10 20.10.58-8.jpg 2023-01-11 15.19.31-1.jpg 2023-01-11 15.19.31-2.jpg
