Don't listen to Dirt, he doesn't know. https://www.joesantiqueauto.com/ignition-coil-resistor-18-12250 I think they go on the wiring board under the dash. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/...Flathead_Electrical_wirediagram1946-48car.jpg
I had one in my ‘42 Ford pu, it was up under the toe board close to the dash in the drivers side. I might still have it around somewhere, but can’t look for it till the weekend.
On the original factory 6 volt systems, Ford used a resistor in series in the wiring from the ignition switch to the coil. The resistor was mounted to a fiber board (usually accompanied by fuses or a circuit breaker) which was attached to the interior side of the firewall. In other words, inside the passenger compartment, under the dash, on the left hand side. At some point in about 1947, the assembly changed and they decided to mount the resistor to the coil mounting bracket. On the flathead V8 engine, the bracket was bolted to the left hand cylinder head, near the front of the engine. They used the exact same resistor as before…..just the new mounting location. Electrically, it remained in the same circuit as before. When the new 8BA/8RT flathead engines were developed for 1949 models (but including the new 8RT engines in the new F series 1948 trucks) Ford went to the modern “can” type coil and eliminated the ignition resistor altogether. This is how it stayed until the advent of the 12 volt electric systems introduced for the 1956 line. Ford used a resistor again (different rating) in series with the coil.
It’s a 1948 with 16000 original miles original paint,Upholstry and carpet I’m trying to keep it as original as possiable ,still has original spare in trunk
Great information, wish I had a picture to go by I would fabricate car is pretty much original with 16000 miles just trying to preserve all I can .
Here is a simple solution perhaps.. from Amazon.... Amazon.com: Spectra Premium c-632 – Ignition Coil : Automotive\
@Rick Partain , I used that same aftermarket resistor on a '48 engine in my '29 Tudor avatar. I used one of the coil screws thru one of the resistor holes and mounted it to the coil and bracket. Didn't realize Ford put them by the coil on '46-'48! Dave
