Technical 6V tach

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ed Kasperek, Aug 7, 2022.

  1. Anyone know where I can buy a ^6V tach ?

  2. Get a dc/dc converter or resistor to drop voltage down to 6volt from 12

or check the Hamb classifieds or eBay for old units.

  3. Where can I get the resistor or the dc/dc convertor?
Is the convertor what is used when 6v to 12v alt update, for the instruments?

    Tks

You can't boost 6V into 12V using a resistor, to make 12V equipment run in a 6V system.

A DC/DC boost converter (a.k.a. step up converter) can increase voltage. Most other devices such as resistors, simpler regulators and so on can only reduce voltage.

I don't know how many 6V tachos there is available, if they work well or what they cost, so I can't tell if you want to go for that or boosting voltage and running a 12V unit.

If you are planning to switch to 12v alternator, you’d also be planning to run a 12v battery. Why not just use a 12v tachometer?
