At least check the clearance when you put it back together...make sure that the converter is not hitting the flywheel bolts. I don't think it's a problem, but to play it safe, check the length of the bolts to make sure they're not hitting the block (they might if they're too long), and use loctite instead of lock washers.

Um, you can just buy pump gears and a front pump gasket.

To start off, some good news, we now know how to correctly install a torque converter. It bolted up fine this time, turns out it works better if it’s installed all the way, go figure! Once we bolted it together we noticed that there’s a 1/4 inch gap between the flywheel and torque converter where the bolts go. It can be seen in the pictures below. Feeling a little gun shy from before we weren’t sure if it was supposed to have this much of a gap. We were afraid that if we bolted the two together we’d pull the flywheel out of the transmission pump. If this is not right what could be the problem?

    Thanks,
    TR

Go ahead. Pull the converter towards the flywheel by hand and then bolt it up, it will be fine

The bolts are supposed to be 5/8" long, from the bottom of the head to the end. Correct length bolts are hard to find, but you might be able to get some at a parts store, or do some grinding to get them to the correct length.
