I am not a fan of these threads but I will chime in because it is too hot to work in the garage today.

Several years back I got burned out building muscle cars, Camaros and T/A's in particular. After I painted up a hugger orange 69 show stopper, everyone else in town decided they wanted one too. I might as well been driving a damn Prius.

I sold them all (except my 442) and started building hot rods again and I fell back in love with my hobby. I don't attend a lot of parking lot shows but I like hitting a few of the big out of town events like the up and coming Hotrodarama in Pendleton, Oregon at month's end. Those events are akin to church revival meetings back in the day. Grab the old ladies, pack up the babies and head to the tent, sweat and pray and get your spiritual batteries charged back up.

Sounds like some of you are in need of a good ol fashioned revival meetin to cleanse your wrenched minds and save your hot rod souls! Place yer hands on your coils and feel the power of the lowered! Hallelujah! Where's the Tylenol?

  2. I am so over seeing full fendered 32 Fords with dropped headlight bars and in general over use of chrome on anything. Don't get confused with ''traditional'' and ''period''...there is a big difference.
I went to a show/swap recently and for the first time i forgot to take my camera (yes an actual camera) and i realized there was nothing new or worth taking pics of. JW

I really want to drive a semi stock looking Willys around.

A buddy of mine stopped by my place a couple weekends ago. He had just left the local cruise in. As he pulled in the driveway, I crawled out from the '55 project. He said "I thought I'd see you downtown". Before I even thought about it, I said " oh yeah. I guess I'd rather work on my junk than take a driver to a car show." It's crazy how my mind has changed about shows. If it doesn't have a swap meet, I'm probably not interested. I'd rather be around my garage, eating rust, ahhh.... Anyway, I'll just blame it on COVID.

  5. I agree with all the comments here about driving this old junk. I have WAY more fun driving my old cars as much as possible more than doing any events to be honest. As I mentioned already...I think...I go to shows, park in visitor parking, and go talk to lots of friends. I’m not overly concerned with what cars are there. I enjoy getting there and back in mine. :D

  6. I love cars, all cars, some more than others. I don't care if it's a '32 hot rod that got pulled out of a 50 year hibernation or a new Hellcat that got driven from the transporter to the show, I'll check them out.
The ricer/tuner bunch not so much, not my bag but I will still check it out as long as he doesn't have the stereo blasting some offensive shit out.

Haha, if the question was would you rather go to a car show or a swap meet. My answer would be swap meet every time

I don't car show. Been to one at the local big boy, and it was fine. I walked around and saw a few cars and took the kid inside for a milkshake and a burger.

I also don't (I dunno if you guys do or not) have one hobby. So I wrench on the car, but I have a lot of other things I do as well, and spreading myself thin seems to keep everything feeling more fresh.

There are just too many car shows. There was one on Canada Day at Galt Gardens. Another one this weekend, at Galt Gardens. That is a lot of sitting in lawn chairs. At this last show, I saw someone wearing a Touring Tin Banff rod run T-shirt. That brought back memories of good times at the Tunnel Mountain campground. That is more of my kind of event but has been shut down. The world has changed.

I like driving events. That’s where the Hot Rod Hundred was birthed from. I just like driving them rather than sitting next to them.

@49ratfink ……oh and the answer is …….there was no question.

I prefer swap meets as well, unfortunately they are now full of household junk.

I had a racer friend say "going to car shows instead of racing is the same as staring at a Playboy vs visiting a Bordello":D

Sometimes all you need is a little 1/4 mile drive to refresh your enthusiasm:)

Same here, I'd much rather drive 'em than park and look at them; or better yet, do both.

That was my first thought also. The very definition of traditional is, as Gimpy said, doing the same old thing over and over again. Tradition does not allow for innovation.

We are all about history here. If innovation and breaking new ground is what you’re after then I’m afraid you’re on the wrong forum

WHOA! Hold on there. I didn't say that I liked the innovations. I fully appreciate a traditional car. I respect the builders of those cars. I started building hot rods in the very last years of the HAMB era. You would have to look real hard to find anything not traditional about either one of my current hot rods.
It is the people wanting to see something NEW that I kinda got a chuckle out of.
I think I fit rather nicely.

Interpretation of a traditional car is very subjective and ambiguous.
As far as what is at a car show , seeing nothing but "period correct" '40 ford coupes and ' 32s would be no better than a "period correct" Camaro , Chevelle and GTO show.

Maybe if yall are bored with 'traditional' hot rods, maybe dig around for some new inspiration.
Plenty of creative stuff was built in the '30s '40s '50s and '60s. It wasn't all model A's with Deuce grills, V8s with automatics, and the same repop parts as everyone else.

But frankly, I am always happy to see even a bellybutton HAMB car at a show. Most I have walked around lately are
    #1. New expensive, fast cars.
#2. '80s trucks with bling wheels and poorly done LS swaps.
#3. Muscle cars, brimming with only the cheapest accessories and chrome from Jegs.
#4. Street rods with shoddy workmanship, super soft interiors, every luxury of 2002, and a 350/350 with the entire edelbrock catalog applied.
And every once in a while, #5. The true, traditional hot rod of 2022. The 1991 Honda civic SI hatchback. The three window coupe of your grandkids generation.

We can innovate... within the parameters of tradition.

    Ah-ha! See? Tricky!
