Brings back memories (cold) of driving my MGTD from Ft. Ord to SoCal late at night on a 3 day pass. No trans tunnel, rear window, or side curtains. Came over a rise on the I-10 and the entire valley was a blaze with lighted smudge pots to protect the orange groves from freezing. The groves are mostly gone now and it probably would take a mountain of paperwork from the Air Quality Board to even own a smudge pot let alone light one.

If you'd kept all that hair in your avatar you wouldn't need that cap.

You do know you're living everyone here's dream life, you dog.

    Hey @squirrel.
Boy does this remind me of my experience with the OT 1959 M.G.A. roadster I had in the military when I was stationed at Fort Sill Oklahoma. My first and only, never again, British Automobile.

    old house Lawton (2).jpg

When I got out of the Army in 1975 on December 10th, I was determined to drive that POS from Fort Sill back to Merced California. For the most part, the trip was uneventful, as I kept my fingers crossed all the while, listening to the song of the 4 banger, and wishing I had side curtains, and really wishing I had a heater!

I took interstate I-40 all the way to flagstaff where I dipped down to catch I-17 south to intersect with
I-10, to hook up with I-5 in Los Angeles !

Boy did that ever bring it home to me, that this isn't the car to be in, when next to big rigs and seeing the word " GOODYEAR " spinning next to me, with the top of the tires, taller than the British death bucket! and it was raining !

I made it home and promptly sold it and bought my first IHC truck, a 1956 S-110 retired Bell Telephone service truck, I wish I had never sold it.

Good luck to you Jim, hope you have a few "Whitworth" wrenches with you !
Thanks for the pictures from Dennis.

I'm hoping that a snowmobile suit and helmet with face shield were involved in that deal.

Ironic that I, a Minnesotan, can't stand cold and I would most assuredly bail on any event that required me to drive an open car through freezing temps. And then you Squirrel, an Arizonan, go ahead and do it.

Snow tires, chains on a 46 hot rod Jailbar truck & driven on frozen Lake Erie to tow ice shanties. Full house 59A Flatty, chrome stacks etc. That guy's next truck was a 40 with a J-2 in it. Never went on the ice, but driven all winter.

Thanks everyone! I made it home....500 miles from Santa Fe, left at 5 AM.

What a dumb car to take on dumb trip. Maybe I'll take it to Drag Week in September.

problem is there isn't enough room for me in the car with a 1250cc 4 banger

  20. Jim, this thread is a reflection on today's cell phone use. If people don't get a quick response, they think something is wrong. He's old, did he die? Did he have a heart attack? Is he mad at us? LOL. Glad you didn't freeze up. :)

Given what Jim was doing at the time, seems like a legit question, smart phone age or not...LOL. Just change the line to "He's old, he does dumb things in dumb cars. Did he die this time?"

When my 6'3" bro and I drove an MG Midget from Fresno to JellyStone and back in '79 we had the good sense to do it in June.
