AI remember that. My older brother had a quadraphonic system, you could play stereo records on it, but to get the effect the record had to be quadraphonic too. I remember The Who put out an album, Quadraphoenia that was recorded in quadraphonic, I thought is was a great album and I enjoyed sitting in the room and listening to that.

Early Pink Floyd I believe we're the first to use it live in the late 60s. They had a little joystick called an Azimuth coordinator that would move the sound between the speakers set up in the four corners. This was when Syd was still around...

  3. I recall they were sold as a "Vibrasonic". I had one in a car for about 3 Months in the 80's and took it out because I was tired of being "Vibraonic - ed".

The Honda commercial kills it though, could have done without that!

A high school buddy drove a nice ice blue '68 GTO. I remember bucket seats, console with "his n hers" automatic shifter...
    And that reverb switch.

I may as well add that the one I put in my '57 was made by Spark O Matic.
This thread looks like it could last longer than the fad.

  8. Still have the Motorola Vibrasonic that was in my first 64 Dodge back in 1980. It was cool for a minute but no way it was gonna make it for cruisin around. Couldn't wait to stab in a modern cassette deck back then. Sorry for the big pic.

I had a vibrasonic unit in my new 66 Super Sport. Made a hell of a racket when you hit s chuckhole. At the time I thought it was cool?

Had a vibrasonic in my 64 Galaxie in 65. You thought it sounded like a racket on railroad tracks or chuckholes, you should of heard it when I got broadsided in the quarter panel with it on.

I remember a factory option one in a Pontiac 2dht. (I think it was like a 1962)... sounded really good on some songs.

It pretty much went away when FM Stereo/8-track became commonplace.

I started out in the 1950s with what I thought at the time was super sound :D,a little transistor radio the size of a pack of Camel cigarettes, with a ear bud!! WOW,how cool was that!!
Well after some time along came HiFi an then Streio,an my AM started to be replaced by FM,and a long come reverb,as if my tunes had not all ready been messed with enough:confused:
Maybe,I just never had great ears,I loved my Doo Wop,just like it was to start with,an all these add ons seeem only a way to ask more $ for stuff.
Ya,get the hell off my grass too !Punk:cool:

Buddy of mine bought a new Camaro after his first tour in Viet Nam. Re-upped for a second tour and left his car for me to drive to college. Can still hear Simon and Garfunkel in my head with the reverb unit cranked up. That was back in 1969-70

I put one in my 57 back around 1990. It was an electronic one with a power booster and equalizer. I got it from JC Whitney. It sounds good but if left on without the car running it will drain the battery pretty fast. The funny thing is DJ or advertising sound good but one song will sound good while another won't. I still have it in but seldom use it because of all the fiddling around. Also, radio plays cassettes which are pretty much obsolete. Also with the price of gas, I don't do too much cruising these days.

  22. I also had a factory reverb in a 63 1/2 Galaxie, had a switch mounted vertically that stuck out under the left side of the dash. Pull the knob down to turn the unit on, rotate the knob for front / rear fader. Had a extra "dimmer switch" on the floor to quickly turn unit off when the song ended cause the DJ talking through reverb sounded like crap! The actual unit was mounted in the trunk on top of the right wheel well. I was traveling up I5 one night with my girlfriend, doing well over the speed limit when we heard this god awful sound that sounded like a sound effect from a bad science fiction movie. I backed out of the throttle and slowed down just as the right rear tire let go, I guess the spring started to vibrate from the out of round right rear tire as it was getting ready to explode. Saved my bacon that night! Also got a job in the late 60's working at Muntz Stereo City in Salem Oregon installing 4 track then 4/8 track stereos in everything from Mustangs to school busses. Very late 60's cassette tapes were starting to make inroads into the market and eventually killed the 4 and 8 track tape.
