History ID flathead six

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jim K (Massachusetts), Mar 2, 2022.

  1. I'm trying to figure out who made this. It's got two 3-cylinder heads, a distributor smack in the middle, and I think an updraft carb setup. Thanks, Jim

I googled a bit and came up with the Pontiac "split six" which has two heads.
Apparently Pontiac ran with this engine config from 1926 thru 1932.

It is amazing how much 'imagineering' happened in the early days. ;)

  4. That one and one more will make two of those that I've seen.

Split heads was fairly common on big gas powered trucks of that era for ease of maintenance

  7. Thanks guys! That's it! If anyone wants to find the vehicle in my picture, it's in the desert in Joshua Tree National Park. You take the "Wall Street Mill" trail for about an hour, and it ends in an old ore mill that was used to split ore in order to look for gold. The mill was actually in operation until 1966. There are three old cars out there, including this one.

Thanks again for the insights. Jim
