Old License Plates. Who’s got them?

Thought I would start a thread in a more visible location, and see what happens. I’m pretty sure just about everyone on here has a couple old license plates tacked up on the wall… some of us have more than a couple. I’m not going to do a big photo dump, but I’ll keep priming the carb and see if she’ll run. Feel free to post your cool plates here. Here’s a teaser pic of the plate wall in the new garage.

This is the oldest plate in the collection… so far. 1914 Wisconsin.

Lousy picture taken around 2006 BL (before LEDs). I do have all the states represented plus a couple of provinces. Many of my choices were based on the graphics rather than age. My oldest is a 28 CA plate. DSC07148.JPG

Let’s keep this rolling. 1951 Montana - prison made plates. For those of you that thought this was only a joke.

Mine are somewhat smaller (trading cards of license plates) plus the metal "bicycle" plates that came in Wheaties in the early 1950's.

@carbking I have small plates too. Here in Wisconsin, each city used to issue bicycle registration plates. A few of them have followed me home.

I think it started during WWII that Illinois made soy bean based plates. I’d describe it as a bit like a cardboard/plastic composite.

I need to redo these and get them assigned to the Fordor, assuming I get my ass in gear and get it out again.

The first thing I ever bought from the Warshawsky & Co. Auto Parts store, I was about 13. Even then I knew, it was Deuce’s for me.

When I was shopping for my '48 I stopped by an antique store to try to find some sort of passable tag to drive a car home with, and in a box full of 1970s tags was this pair of aluminum 1949 plates, with a '50 parking pass for a semi local college. Coolest set of tags I have ever owned. IMG_20211120_150526096_HDR.jpg

I like that college tag. I have this Virginia plate, with a Fairfax county tax tag added.

The county tags are really cool too- I have a couple Nelson county ones. There is a '30s Lynchburg one covering a hole in a shed wall near me. I have been meaning to ask the owner if I can buy it.

  13. I have one of those. Look at the left side of the garage wall. A friend has one without the wavy lines on the bottom. Supposed to be for big trucks.

Gratuitous plate pic of the day. Somewhat rare Nebraska temporary plate, only issued to out of state residents who purchased a vehicle in Nebraska.

15 years ago, I noticed I had 3 - 4 each of 1950, 1954, & 1956 plates from several states, so I thought I'd try to get all 48 states in these years. So far I've come up with maybe 20 of each. I got started WAY too late - plates used to cost $2 - $5 at swap meets; now rusty, bent ones are 10 times that.

Here’s some older plates that I rescued out of a friend’s shed a while back.

8349FD90-8437-44DC-82DD-D694DB979128.jpeg This is a permit tag that custom cutters had to purchase during harvest season. I think in 1967 paper tags were issued.

Picked these up a while ago. Know absolutely nothing about them. Never seen another set anywhere. Thought they were cool enough to bring home.
