Technical Vintage Sun tach

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Rumblin Rolf, Sep 10, 2019.

  1. I just bought a Sun tach to be used with my Plymouth inline flat six.
On the top of face face is printed
SUN MFG. CO. CHICAGO ILL. U.S.A.

Down to the left below the pointer says
    MODEL
    3 1/2 AT553

On the back below left bolt
DIST and below something not readable

On the back below right bolt
    Probably GRD

    And on the battery lid
    J16
    6
    6 CYL

Any ideas of year of make, how to get it operating, kind of battery and such?
    My '37 Plymouth is nowadays 12 volts, negative ground. Sun tach AT553 no1.jpg Sun tach AT553 no2.jpg Sun tach AT553 no3.jpg Sun tach AT553 no2.jpg Sun tach AT553 no3.jpg

  2. Is it a one piece?
I though they came out in the mid to late 60's, with a much different design.

If it is a two piece I would say, fairly early late 40's early 50's.
The Fire truck my sending unit came off was a 47 or 48 Chevrolet it had the same style tach.
The tach was mounted in the pumper body and was junk that is the reason I did not take it as well.

Williams instruments in Arkansas is your best bet.
They did my sending unit and tach.

Neat looking tach, appears period correct for the car. Locate a late model tach and swap out the internals with yours using the old gauge face. There may be a thread here on the HAMB on a how to.

  5. You believe there should be a sender unit?

  6. Still a question...

  7. A couple of Years ago I picked up a Older Sun Tack it was Stamped
on the Back 1966, its 12 Volt neg. ground.

    Just my 3.5 cents

Old post, I know, but it popped up a google search so I thought I'd add some photos of a similar tach I have so folks can see the original writing on the back side and the internals. Bought cheap on eBay years ago and converted to magnetic pickup - that's why there's an extra hole for a connector at the top.
