Yea, the Joe Mac one was as perfect as it can get, esp when it was chopped ~1.5" (?). Although I liked it much better w/the Cragar than the 21 stud. That car created a life-long admiration for the Sport Coupe. I still like Cabriolets better, but there's no knocking the SP.

Dad was a life long friend of Joe Mac, and his cars have many sourced parts from Joe in Long Beach:) RIP IMG_1010.JPG

I was actually able to buy a rusty pos roadster from an aging gent in San Jose Ca. Who completely tunneled me and my good pal also an auto expert. Needless to say we should have bought a rusted sport coupe like the author of this post expelled. Sorry in Santa Rosa

Joebrown, have any side pics? I'm liking the forward slant of that top.

Papa, Love the originals. Please don't hurt it.

is that Gumby driving the green sportie ?
memory says that there was a Gumby cartoon on Sunday mornings, the main commercial on that show was for a Slinky... never got one.

Long time listener first time caller. Bought this “Coupster” six months ago. The only thing I’ve done is put a Tri-power set up on it. I’m interested in doing some fabrication work on it but would interested to hear any suggestions on whether making into a coupe again would be too much work over doing some modifications to make it look more like a traditional roadster?

This is something I delved into at one point...there are several threads about it...in the end the differences between the 2 body styles are too numerous to make it worthwhile...it looks (hard to tell w small pics) like the builder made an awkward combing around the seat and leaned the posts back a bit
my take on it would be to shorten the doors tops down to the belt line and put semi round tops (tubing cut in half) and lower that combing using tubing cut in 1/2 (on its side) so it has a rounded profile at rear and sides like orig. rdstr rather than flat as it is now...but @Jet96 has valid point...save it for the winter at least lol

Good thread. Definitely not easy to de- uglify a Sports Coupe. Especially a 28-29. Quite a few body mods to get it to look ok. We did our best.

Many thanks! I'm 6'2'' 230 lbs so I didn't want to sit on the car, I wanted to sit IN the car and stretch it out so it doesn't look as stubby. The frame is 32 rails, no channel. 106 inch wheelbase.

The body mods are as follows:
    - floors welded to the bottom of the frame rails to gain 6" of leg room and to use a proper 17" OE '40 Ford steering wheel with my long legs.
    - flush doors
    - widened cowl.
    - antisectioned quarters to eliminate the after door 'step' and bring them level with the doors, quarter panel bead is inverted at the door band.
    - fabricated tulip panel topper to bridge between the quarter panels.
    - fabricated lower windsheild mounts that mate to the sedan/coupe cowl with orchard upper windshield stantions (sp?)
    - window tracks retained, the car will have roll up windows when the soft top gets done, in the meantime it'll have a tonneau cover.

    Some build details here:
    https://canadianrodder.com/forum/in...-a-sport-coupe-to-cabriolet-conversion.24266/

The car in motion here. Hood and hood side panels were yet to be added.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the specs and the video. Beautiful and very helpful! I love the 40 steering wheel. Will that fit on an original model A column with the adapter?
Looking forward to doing some modifications as well.

    Best Regards

Thanks! I'm sorry I didn't have a Model A steering column so I don't know. Perhaps the Model A guys could chime in.

    I used an IDITIT Old School steering column ( three bolt Grant pattern) and made an adaptor for the OE Ford taper. Pix here;

...this pic was shared by @A Boner...if you look closely another Sporty made the Hotrod cut as again did many others...they are by no means ugly as many have said...keep those technically 3 windows coming...;)

They had Cabriolets in Model A so a bit of Hotrodery applied aka Cabby to a Sporty and you'd have a Convertible that'd live up to poor mans Roadster in a closer reality...they look pretty good with the top off even with the window frames present...
