Cool pictures! I remember as a kid the big old gas pumps with the spinning dial on the front. All the way up to my late teens in fact. The problem was....'back-in-those-days' film was too expensive (and development) to be snapping shots of gas pumps!NOW!!....I sorta wish I had. Just like the old steam powered locomotives that stormed by my Pa & Granny's house at precisely 4:00pm EVERYDAY! Wish I hadda pic of that too!! 6sally6
I have a 1934 Gilbert and Barker clock face. It had sat in a collapsed shed til my friend dropped it off to me a few years ago.
A couple that I have and just dragged home from storage. A 10 gal. Gilbert & Barker and a 5 gal. Frye Mae West style. Also have a pre-visible Gilbert & Barker and this rare Tokheim 423 Double Lubester oil dispenser. Since I also have the original glass cylinders and all the bits and pieces, maybe I can get them done now that they're home. Or not. Sorry for grainy pics, cell phone in a dark building.
They made this a historical site. Minus the garage, they rehabbed the place. It looks really nice and cool.
Sure does Dave, extremely cool! Nice that some communities have the foresight to preserve some history instead of dozing for parking.
Here is your pre-visible Gilbert & Barker after a bit of amateur restoration. It originally carried the SICO brand of Mt. Joy, PA; and you can see the 16.5 inch globe to the right. There are quite a few pump guys out there and one was nice enough to make me the various labels at a very nominal price. G&B started about 1911; was once owned by Standard Oil; and survives today as Gilbarco. Take a look at the pump the next time you buy gas- you might be using my pump’s descendent! 9 foot tall and very heavy- these need a sturdy base and a firm footing. A long term car collector near York, PA saved this from a nearby farm where it was used to pump kerosene. Due to its good lubricating properties, I think the pump would still function today- as it approaches its 100th birthday. The man passed it along to me near his 94th birthday. He has passed, but the pump will go on a bit longer.
Thanks @greenie-reddy! Heavy is an understatement! Here’s a neat original clock face pic I saved from PogoGas. Rare and expensive today. How about those two-tone wingtips!
In 2015 I accompanied a horse club that hired me as a veterinarian to accompany the group as they rode the Pony Express Trail from St Joseph, MO to Carson City NV. I took my 28 roadster along and drove most of the trail on dirt roads. Just off the trail in Nebraska I was looking for gas. I can't remember the name of the town but the station was obviously old time and unfortunately it was closed on Sunday when I came through. I looked through the window and saw the old pumps. The picture of the Ford Garage is in Julesburg Colorado and was supposed to be an original Ford Garage. It had a number of old gas pumps inside.
