I picked this up on eBay the other day and it came in today’s mail. I never knew these existed. It is a hard bound book of 10 spotlite pocket magazines. Had anyone seen these before? Are there more of them? Man oh man. The internet will always take a backseat to books and magazines in my world

I’m completely flabbergasted that you didn’t already own that !
Oh well,,,,I’m certain it is probably the last known copy in existence.
    You lucky dog !

By the way,,,,,I’m the same way,,,,I just absorb information better from a book .
A lot of good information on the web,,,,but I love books more .

There were individual paperback books like that in the 70s, specific to one area. I've had a few of them, transmissions, body and paint, etc.

But that's probably 1960s? Nice find.

  7. Looks like copyright 1964?
    Period correct tech!
It doesn't get any better than that.

I had all those in “little pages” back in the day. They along with my models did not survive when my family moved while I served in RVN.:(
    Nice score.

I Love all of the old materials such as these, besides, you can’t get that vintage aroma on the ‘net! Great finds, Mark.

That is cool, have some of the individual ones but never seen a fully bound set. Peterson did a lot of good publications in 60’s and 70’s.

  13. Yes, I have all the ones they did in the early 70's*, but have never seen that. Great score!

    * Read them to death. So to speak, I still have them.;)

I have two of the library bound books. One covers ‘61-‘62 - Spotlite books S-516 thru S-525. The other one (the one Moriarity has) covers ‘64-‘65 - Spotlite books S-549 thru S-558. I’ve been looking for years for a one of these library books that would cover the Spolite issues in between, but nothing has come up. I have a full set of the Spotlite series. Just thought it would be cool to have them in hard bound books. :)

I was just thinking that today Carp....that old book/magazine aroma IS part of the experience.

  19. Great score, Mark. What a fabulous wealth of information there. Like yourself, I'm partial to the print media, especially "vintage" stuff like this. Enjoy.

  20. That hard bound book is the Hot Rod BIBLE, so to speak. That is a great score.

I will have to agree with @Moriarity.

The internet is a great resource, but there is a lot to be said for the older books that were published, so that you could really work on your automobile, and machinery/hot rods .

I know I am preaching to the choir here, but just a reminder to everybody, whether its e bay or at a swap-meet, when you see the old Audel's and Motors manuals, these books are incredible when it comes to information and great illustrations when working on the old stuff.

They are just too cool and should be on everybody's book shelf, IMO. I am still very impressed at how articulate the technical writing is and how clear and concise the illustrations are.

Like @hotrodjack33 said, they have an aroma that is from a time period long ago, that " IS " part of the experience!

I have a couple of those small books pictured. I never realized it was a series. Our school Library also had Hot Rod Magazines. Made my trips to the Library worth going to! lol

so, I just dug out my spotlite books and I don't have as many as I thought I did. What number did they start and end with? My earliest one is 506 custom car grilles....

Here’s info on all the Spotlite tech books as listed on the great website at www.99wspeedshop.com.

I remember that in 1966 or thereabouts, Petersen was selling the little spotlite magazines cheap in one of their ads so I sent my money and bought a bunch of them. Couldn't afford all of them with the little lunch money I got from mom, though. It doesn't surprise me that they would bind them up in a book.

There’s 48 car related (including 2 model car) Spotlite issues. As far as I know, S-559 is the last “little magazine” issue. The other non-car related issue, S-507, was titled “Teen Make-Up”.

  29. I wonder if that bound version of those books was ever offered for sale. Maybe they were offered as a "premium" if you bought a big enough subscription to their other magazines. Or could they have been made up this way in hardback form specifically for distribution to public libraries?

Every once in a while, a check would show up from Petersen if you wrote something that was included in the spotlight books or annuals. About 25% of the original price for a freelance piece
