I'll probably just keep it a 4 door however I would eventually like to chop it. At the moment I won't for the sake of finishing it. I'd like to keep it 4 door so my kiddos can get in easier.
Wow, the parts car is a nice find for that price. So many good parts and the colour of the interior is killer.
I like the color of the interior myself. For some reason I've had a bunch of people ask me if I plan on redoing the interior in a different color because that color is ugly. Odd to me.
Here's my 4 Door that I made into a convertible with a Carson top and still a 4 door with the help of Scott Guildner while I worked at his shop and some help from my son too, who now has this Merc in Columbus Ohio...
Got some stuff cut off to start the body work on my 50. At one time someone frenched the headlights and welded on a chevy grille. I am not a fan of the grille but I will be frenching the lights again. Whoever did the work before just spot welded it all and bondo over top. All these welds and seams will be ground out and welded properly.
Looks like they intended to mold that grille bar in and paint it. I wouldn't mind that bar if it was chromed and bolted on but I agree it had to get cut off and that headlight french job was crap, too. You're doing the right things there.
That is what I think was done at one time but it looked like crap. I think I am going to just put the parts car's 50 merc grill in it and do away with the front turn signals. Maybe try and drill into the headlight housing and put turn signals in there, not sure yet. I am going to start stripping all the old primer off since there is rust coming through. hopefully I don't find more of this.
There’s some neat small round reverse lights used on several old cars. They are clear. I’ve thought about those frenched in the front with an amber bulbs.
they may look decent too depending on what they are. I'm struggling with lights on this thing. I want the Gene Winfield bubble tail lights but can't find any. I may just go with something like these. Biggest thing is to get rid of the Cadillac tail lights it has. If I used these type of tail lights I'd like to find some matching turn signals like so.
Do Bates motorcycle little bullet lights where the overrider and bumper come together and nothing in the body.
I would like to find a way to put the tail lights in the bumper but not sure how to do it without messing anything up. I also don't really have the cash to rechrome anythings so I am affraid of what I cut rusting.
Well I am looking at what primer and paint to get, and I know I'm going to get told how dumb I am for doing a bunch of work and putting cheap paint on it but I have heard both good and bad things. I am looking at TCP Global for my epoxy, 2k build primer, and paint. I'm going to try and rush and get this thing in epoxy before it gets cold. I was thinking burgundy, but this purple keeps calling my name.
Been trying to get my metal work done so when I epoxy it I am not cutting into fresh primer. This car has cadillac tail light holes in it and, well I hate them. I found this picture of a frenched in factory tail light and I really dig it. seems like a cool option just not sure how to go about building the metal piece to french them in.
curious… what kind of Cadillac tail lights were on there? maybe a photo of the mounting holes on your car… (just for research purposes.)
You could build a wire frame around the merc light as a start. Or, set the lenses against the body and scribe it’s shape then build the recess
