Got one of aluminum aftermarket hubs for a 3 bolt wheel. Are the splines all the same, Ford, Chevy? Feels tight.

No they are not. Also the horn kits are pretty well column specific within a range of columns. If there is a number on it you can probably trace down the number.

It's a 10159, looks like AMC maybe? Trying it on a Chevy. Thanks

  5. I found the splines on late model GM columns and at least Advanced Design '48-'54 Chevy pickups are the same. 'It was pretty easy to adapt my stock '53 pickup steering wheel to a late model (late 80s) tilt column.

Makes me think GM splines are universal?

Most GM splines fit most other GM splines. But other companies used different splines.

AMC got some columns from the other automakers, too....so they can be tricky.

I've used some Jeep spoke steering wheels on the 72 Chevy C10 I had years ago, probably a jeep out of the 70's or 80's, it was over 20 years ago. I've got two of them in a box upstairs, maybe it's time to advertise them? Maybe jeep was buying steering stuff from GM?

Found another hit on the 10159, looks like it's for a Ford, so AMC maybe used a Ford column. Anyway no fit Chevy, glad I didn't try and run it down with the nut 'cause it almost goes on. Speedway sells the hubs. GM says 49-68 for one and -69-94 for another. Splines may be the same and something else like the horn changed.

    Thanks for the replies.

Grant still makes that adapter, but you have to buy it in a kit -- they don't sell it alone.
AMC used a different supplier up through 65. They had two different suppliers, but I don't recall the names. In 65 they started using Saginaw (GM) steering boxes and columns. 71+ Jeep models are AMC and use AMC parts (including Saginaw steering boxes and columns). I don't know about pre AMC Jeeps (AMC bought Jeep in 1970).

The amc column is a GM shaft and spline.

The GM columns were used into the late 1980s and maybe later but stopped driving them by then. The steering box was a Saginaw 525 and power box was a 76 both GM stuff along with rag joints shafts and columns tilt or not. The electric goodies in the column were prestolite on some years and amc on the others..
