There are shafts on each side and an attached arm for mechanical brakes on the front view…..how does it get driven? Is that a cover where a yoke or enclosed drive shaft would connect
Some rather sophisticated hillbille engineering there. Looks like they cut off the front housing where the pinion shaft would exit, and welded it shut to hold oil. I've seen some with just a tin or even wood cover, but that one is professional ! sorry, I dont know what it is, other than a couple hundred pounds of scrap
I wonder if had been used under a trailer. That would maybe explain blocking off the driveshaft connection like that.

Around a 26 Buick from looking at the wheels on this one. The wheel is attached to the hub and you remove the rim from the wheel to change a tire. Probably not worth much but those would make nice wall hangers or hose hangers on the wall.
