18-19 year old Don Prudhomme helping with Tommy Ivo’s Twin Buick set up in 1959-60 prior to setting records in So Cal and then off on their official capacity as the first touring professional drag racers.

    Hello,

With the intent to become the fastest in the B/Gas Dragster and the A/Gas Dragster Class at the local So Cal dragstrips, this scene was played out during the build of the famous twin injected Buick motors in the Kent Fuller chassis to surprise a lot of local racers and builders. A lot of the early car clubs raced at the local dragstrips with their hot rods and built-up race cars. Tommy Ivo and the San Fernando Road Kings contingent was no different starting in 1952 and continuing its rich history today.

The results from the early single engine Kent Fuller chassis to the 1959 version with twin injected Buick motors was fun to capture on my little movie camera. It showed the high technology used in making a single Buick motor FED a memory in many racers view as it whipped down the local dragstrips. Our local dragstrip was Lion’s Dragstrip. or L.A.D.S. (Lions Associated Drag Strip) as it was listed in publications. Dragstrip can be used either way as one word or two.

The scene in the photo shows the team doing some maintenance to attack the local dragstrips. In 1959, showcased the new dragster at Lion’s Dragstrip and Riverside Raceway. It was so powerful and fast that records fell quickly starting with the unheard of sub 9 second barrier down the quarter mile.

Not only were they prepping for the always packed So Cal contingent in the A/Gas Dragster Class, but after the record setting runs, the team of Ivo and Prudhomme started the whole pro touring attitude to dragstrips all over the country.

“The first one that was the most famous, due to the fact that no one else was doing cross country road trips for drag racing sponsorships. Sure, others towed across the country for a big Westcoast event starting in 1959, but these two guys started the whole pro touring events and attractions.”

“Road Kings? Ha! True to the club's title meanings...”

"Ever since Don Prudhomme was part of Tommy Ivo’s crew and friend, My brother and I have always liked the progress of his career. It was one long, successful, competitive career. He was seen as an integral part of each of Tommy Ivo’s Buick FED race cars. He was even part of the first professional USA road tour of the major dragstrips with the Ivo Twin Buick FED."

“Then, as history has told us, he and Don Prudhomme went on a cross country road trip to start the whole touring thing for the big time, big name drag racers, first from So Cal, then from all over. They were getting paid to tour and show up at various drag strips in the USA.”

Finally, the Buick invasion continued with Tommy Ivo’s Buick FED as another version with Don Prudhomme as owner and driver.
