    I'm putting 1940 rear brakes on my 31 Model a , getting ready to order new wheel bearings part # 68-1225 , the problem is I'm finding different sizes for the same part # , some say 2.840 O.D. others say 2.780 O.D. , I even found a 3rd. size , does anyone know which size I need ? The best brand or supplier to purchase from ?

    The '40 hubs take the larger OD bearing.
    The ID is the same '28-"48.

  6. Unfortunately it appears Ford stopped using Timkens after 32 and went to them in 1 ton trucks in 44.
    Anyway. The Model A & B used bearing 28156 (Bore 1.574") the pinion cone was 28314XD and other cones were 28317 (OD 3.151")

    cone=outer race

  7. I can cross some other bearing part numbers, but I need the number on the actual bearing,

    I don't have the actual bearing , all I have is the # 68-1225 , which is supposed to be the correct # for 1940 rear hub .

    from Downey, Ca

    In the early 80's as a cabinet maker a woman came in (small work welcomed) with a piece of wood to be cut. When I asked how long she presented me with a piece of yarn she had cut to length.

    Unless your old bearings are really shot, I would clean them up and use them. Some of the new ones are too soft, and the cages have been known to fall apart too

    I have no old bearings , That is why I'm inquiring about what size new bearings I would need . and where would be the best place to buy them .

  12. Oh I wasn't being a smart ass, I wasn't aware you didn't have anything to go on. You can't mic the inside diameter of the axle tube? I guess I'm not understanding what you've got going on. I'll slowly back away :D ms-MTbgeS.gif

    No I didn't take it that way , No problem here , I have new Model a bearings for rear hubs but I guess their not same as the 40 hubs I'm putting on the A converting to hydraulic , I'll check all dimensions tomorrow , and figure out exactly what it is I need for the conversion.

    Ordered new bearings today , I have another question about the 1940 backing plates , toward the top of the plates there is two disc on the inside toward the top and on the back side two bolts hold these disc in place , there is also two heavy duty springs on the bolts , what are these ? and what is their function . The brake shoes cover these disc .

    The 11/16" "bolts" & the cams inside are the upper brake shoe adjusters.
    At the bottom, outside of the plate are the lower brake shoe adjusters.
    There is a bunch of info available on "how to" adjust the shoes.
