Is there an inexpensive way to step down 12v to use original gauges, without having to do each gauge separately?

Figure out what kind of gauges you have, first. For example, if you use a Ford or Dodge thermal voltage regulator on a GM magnetic gauge, it will just make the gauge jump back and forth....since the gauges have a completely different method of working.

The LM7806 regulator should work with either kind, but make sure to figure out the current draw, and use a sufficient heat sink.

LM7806 regulator IC used here, feeds all gauges that need 6v, 60 cents, mount to clean metal under dash for heat sink
