Ron, You are amazing! Kind of in line with your motorcycles, my wife just sent me this one. Bet he would love your pix!
The Granatelli brothers pose with one of their early Indianapolis cars, in their Chicago shop/service station in 1946. This was the 1930s era Miller, with a Ford engine. A beautiful car. This is the one they drove to Indy because they didn't have a way to tow it. Danny Kladis qualified the car and finished 21st. They certainly reached for the stars early. Andy in the cockpit, Joe at the hood.
The remains of Jim Hurtubise's car after crashing during Pole Day practice in 1965. Herk was making his 500 comeback, after being severely burned at Milwaukee in 1964. He lost control of his Halibrand/Ford when the throttle stuck, and slammed the turn four wall. The fuel tank was crushed, but there was no fire. It contained one of the new, self-sealing foam cells, mandated after the deadly 1964 500. The fuel cell material was originally developed for helicopters then seeing combat in Vietnam. With no backup car, Andy Granatelli offered Herk a ride in one of the Novis. He qualified back in the pack, because of his late-in-the-month attempt, but passed a dozen cars on the first lap before the gearbox gave out.
