I have not seen this 1950 Ford in person yet. From this pic does anyone know if the chrome handle is a parking brake OR overdrive handle? Thanks! c9_jpg.jpg

Well I see two handles. The large one is the park brake. The smaller one up higher might be OD, but I remember them being to the right of the steering column on old Fords.

Does the small one open the hood latch?

Hard to see, but it does look like HOOD on the smaller handle. The larger one is twistable and is probably a hand brake not labeled.

    Hello,
There are wide choices of dash and accessories as the Ford models changed from year to year.

Here is a clear photo of another 50 Ford dash with corresponding handles, big and small.

The big handle looks like the exact unit in the blurry photo, again, probably for an emergency parking brake application.

The twist brake handle is always tricky when teaching someone to do a "hill start" with a stick shift transmission, clutch, brake pedal and throttle. The twisting motion is difficult to adjust and coordinate with the clutch/throttle, while trying to look ahead at where the car is going. A floor brake lever with a push button is much easier to show and perform the dreaded "Hill start" in any stick shift car/truck. YRMV

Thanks guys, I should have clarified, the large chrome handle, I knew what the small one was for because as mentioned, it says HOOD on it.

    Jnaki,
THANK YOU for your pic, my purpose here was to determine if this car has O/D or not and your photo shows what a car with O/D looks like.

@jnaki There are no dreaded hill starts when your Studebaker is equipped with hill holder.

That sure looks like a parking brake handle.

An overdrive handle would be the same size as the hood handle.

I remember that park brake handle well. Pull to set and pull and twist to release. as jnaki said, a bit tricky to learn to use as a hill holder in a stick shift car.
