Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Just doing body work. Set the engine and trans in place. Heated and bent the steering arms yesterday. Will have to update my build thread.

 

Doing a mock-up fitting of narrowed front fenders, mini-tubbed rear fenders, running boards, etc. on my avatar channeled A. It's good to be back at it after a year long absence due to injury, operations and recovery.

 

Today I managed to wedge a AC condenser intended for a 1964-1/2 to 1966 Mustang, into my 1960 Falcon.

It took cutting, welding, trimming, some rivnuts, and some elevator bolts. I still need to cut holes for the hoses.

Cleanup comes tomorrow.

Did some more grinding on the front sheet metal on my '47 and then tinned it so the filler will stick.
Scribed and finished the lower edge of the sill plates I made for my friend's '33. Off to the powder coat shop next step. Plans are red to match the interior.

 

I finished some welding underneath the cab so I can check that off my to do list. I spot welded the trim around the edge of the piece under the seats ( it will be removable ) also got one pair of seat brackets finished.

 

Researched why my fuel gauge stays above full. Cleaned sender and voltage from the gauge was correct. Reset arm stops and got it correct for the dash gauge. Ran the engine, voltage was higher causing the gauge to read higher. Found lowering the the voltage by using the lights brought everything back to normal. The change was an alternator from a generator. The bottle has a cardboard gasket to keep the fumes in the tank.
Everything is great now..old cars are so much fun.

August 26th 2021 Hot August nights sapping my energy in the shop. It's a broiler, even at midnight. I slacked off for a couple of days but then got back to it before I lost my momentum. Finished the nailhead crank journal polishing with 800 grit, 1000 grit and Blue Magic passes. Cleaned the oil passages with nylon brushes, Oileater and Hoppes number 9 passes.

Decided against chamfering for this low RPM shadetree build. Now it's time to measure, measure, measure.

Beer of the day was The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery's Milk Stout. Background music was Jonny Lang Lie to Me.

 

I have some bed sides to chose from but they do not match the rust the rest of the truck has. So a local welding shop I frequent had some 5' x 10' 3/16 plate that came out of the machine room at a local furniture factory. So now I have my new bed and it looks like it belongs there ( plus the weight is a huge plus ) oh and it was free. So like the whole build I am having to fabricate every piece and the bed will be no different. The plan is to get it mounted, add a 3 or 4 inch band. Maybe some stake pockets and a tailight panel. Plus make so one man and a cherry picker can remove it. Down the road some old school wheelie bars . One of the things I am enjoying about this is I can point out all the donated parts that friends have given me. There was a day when we could have taken this thing from where it is at and had it running in a few days time. But those days are long gone for me. Added a little filler to the seams on the front of my '47. Still need to smooth them a bit with a smaller torch; but the little propane torch was not at the shop for some reason. Became tired of fighting gravity and decided to finish the lower half of the headlight rings along with sides of the grille opening when the fenders are off.

 

Working on the bed, I got some Hat channel that is used to build school buses ( donated ) to stiffen the plate from side to side and have a couple 1/2" inserts welded into the frame for a start. The angle is just to hold things straight for the time being. The homemade tool box will be a good place to hold a battery. Things are looking up. I have all the machine work for the motor completed just trying to get my shop out of fabrication mode before engine assembly .

Damn....that is a nice machine!

 

Keep on Keeping on ! I have made some progress on securing the bed, six 1/2 bolts should do the trick. Everything is just in the mock up stage for now ow.

nothing yesterday dont antipate any progress today,the new pup is too much fun at the moment.day 4 no dog mess in the house yet,frequent trips to the grass is paying off.

 

Took my coupes new Rootleib hood to my buddy’s shop to get it painted. Just a little radiator/shell adjustment and it fit like it should. This will be the first time I’ve ever put a full hood on a hot rod, I’ve always preferred an exposed engine.
We also picked up the freshly reupholstered bucket seats for our Corvair tonight. I’ll install them tomorrow and take them out for a test drive.

 

Had the inside and underfloor surfaces sandblasted. Exterior and all bolt on panels were blasted, repaired and etch primed years ago. In the spray booth and the etch priming starts. A few additional pinholes and minor rust to rectify before final body work and colour begins.

So the other day I fixed my leaky gas tank float, had to pull off the hardtop to get to the tank behind the seats. Today, with the top still off, I replaced the rear shocks, the top mounts also accessed from behind the seats. Found a new pair of probably 40 year old shocks in my stash that fit. Sure like finally using stuff I've hung onto for years. Went for a drive. I'm not much into roadsters but I must say it felt nice.

 

Sprayed some epoxy primer on the frame, hood and side panels of my '32 project. Now I don't have to be so careful about sweating on it, 100 degrees in the shop today. It should cure well at least.

 

Finally got the radiator modified and bolted down and got the hood back on my Model A. The fit is nothing to write home about but at least it's on the car and it covers the little 151 Iron Duke four-banger!

Next challenge up...... Working out some radiator hoses to fit.

Fabbed up a nerf bar from 7/8" stainless & 3/16" flat stock and mounted for fitment. Tomorrow, probably a couple hours with 400 to 7000 sandpaper and cutting oil to bring the shine back.

 

Couple days ago went out to fire up the Willys after putting on big port truck heads and gasser fender dump headers/mufflers. Wouldn't fire. Traced it to my almost new Carter rotary fuel pump. Sent an order to Summit for a new one. Summit parts get here almost before you order them!! Anyway noticed that the non-working one is 24V. No idea why I got a 24V and surprised it worked as long as it did. New one put on and started right up.

 

...new shocks on the front of my 48, greased the front suspension and wheel bearings, drives/ rides much better, love this old truck.

 

Today I rebuilt a SECOND points distributor, tightened all the screws on the Rochester monojet and fabbed up a new air cleaner from 2 pot lids( kinda hokey but it works) on the 250 in my 36. Then I redid my extra brake lights by moving them from the rear of the bed to the front edge and repainted the insides of my tail lights white. The trucks running GREAT now and hopefully with the tail/ brake lights sorted out, the sleepy heads will kinda take notice. Next on the agenda is finally putting in the seat belts that have been on the shelf for the last 20 years. A fairly productive day if I say so myself. Mitch

 

Stopped after 3000 grit, didn't want to much shine and it matches the front spreader. Car doesn't have a lot of glossy bright work on it anyway.....except the Yankee tag light. Mounted it up, slapped some Collinite on it and good to go.
