  1. Just looked at this car for a friend.

barn fresh. Still has the chicken poop on the roof.
The good: one owner, 28k miles supposedly has a title. Bucket seats, console, AC and says SS. Car appears to be complete.
The bad: needs floors, hood, trunk lid, bottom of Qtrs and doors. Plus rust along the bottom of the left sail and usual trunk rain gutter problems. It’s a 283 non-power pack auto.
It’s an ambitious resto. I really don’t care about value personally. I can tell the guy a ball park for metal work. But he is curious about the 2V 283 and end result value.
Rare but doesn’t add any value?
    The price is 4K firm
Sound high to me but I’m the metal guy.

  3. Can't say how the combo affects value but sounds like it needs more metal work than a better body would cost. How many hours will it take?

  4. I can’t fix sheet metal at all, but that price sounds very high for what’s there.

With title, and complete, somebody will shell that much out for it. My thing would be making sure that the sheet metal is available readily. Everything is on a waiting list it seems.

A 283, with SS trim ? This also means that it had the "old" cast iron Powerglide, rather than the "new" aluminum Powerglide.
I thought all SS cars had either the 327 or the 409 engine !?

This reminds me of a Galaxie I looked at a couple of years back.
The bottom line, the seller still thinks it's the same car it was 20 years ago.

In my opinion the '62 was the best of the series by far. These cars seem to go for crazy money around here and have for years. You don't see them much. With that said I think the seller is unrealistic.

You don't see a column shift automatic in a SS that often, but that doesn't mean it's worth that kind of money. In that condition, it's not worth much more than scrap price, in my eye's.

I’m a city boy but that looks like a home made drag for the horse arena, I think it might be the better deal of the two.
The only ‘61 SS I remember was owned by a guy in my neighborhood, it was a 348/4 speed, red convertible. Don’t know about the 1961’s but for ‘62 any engine was available from the six on up.

SS was a trim level, you could order any powertrain you wanted.

  13. The guy interested does his own tear down and blasting.
Door skins and floors would run around 3k for parts.
Probably 100-125hours just on the naked shell.
Plus whatever hidden rust or possible rocker issues may be there

  14. Honestly I felt the car is worth around 2-2.5k with the title.

  15. If it was from around here, in that condition, I would guess the mileage is 128k or 228k.
The driver's seat should be like new, except for the dirt, if it only has 28k.

It's rough, but it appears to be a real SS with the hard to find pieces on it. Assuming it's got a title, eventually it'll find a buyer at that price, the value of these cars has skyrocketed, it would part out for more than the asking price.

The 283-2V column shift is different, but not desirable. I would say it adds nothing to the value, but it's still a '62 SS, and everything you need to restore one of these is available.

How were the rain gutters on the panel?

  21. I guess part of the problem is the sentimental attachment to the car. It’s his grandmothers and his grandad bought it new.
He wants to see someone restore it but I think he’s gonna have to get the price adjusted to reflect condition.

  22. Not bad.
    The roof looks good.
But the piece above the windshield is no longer attached. Looks like cold welds from the factory. That has caused issues on the interior header panel.
It has the typical rocker issues.
I think the panel is worth building myself.
It has a bench seat. Not the buckets.
    Hood is shot.

4k for a very solid no rust hulk yes, that thing need a couple of hundred hours of metal work at 50, 60, 70 dollars per hour.
That's the work I do and I would pass on it...

Impalas are going for crazy money right now. You'd be surprised what people are willing to pay, especially in the lowrider community.

  28. He’ll get the money for it.

push it out of the shed and wash it, vacuum the interior.

Maybe spend 50 bucks on flat black paint and spray it one colour and hide the rust.

It’s a convertable impala SS …. Suckers born everyday !

I didn’t know SS was just a trim package, always thought it was for bigger engine , better suspension … ya know VROOM VROOM WEEEEEEEEEEEE:D

It's a hardtop, not a convertible. But I do agree, if it was out of the barn, washed and clean and advertised, someone would pay that. These are not the cheap, common cars they once were. What they used to go for 10, 20, 30 years ago, really doesn't matter.
